I just got a hold of an old sailboat that I'm restoring. It has a 1964 Yanmar NTS 85 and I finally got it started today. I've got the original instruction book luckily, although no good for complete rebuilding. It does have a belt driven starter, so no hand crank for me thank you very much. The only website I've seen that carries a few engine parts is >>http://www.woodenboatshop.com.au/site/misc/wbs/downloads/yanmar/quickref/QR%2020 07.pdf I'm hoping to find a mechanics manual for this and more parts, I'm thinking I'll have to learn Japanese to trace this one down. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll even scan the instruction book if you like, and post pictures showing how the electric starter is set up with wiring diagram. Maybe you could help me out with the repair manual or cross compatible engine/transmission parts? |

Brandon what parts are you after? not sure where you are, im in Australia i have a few of these engines, and a couple of basket cases. The NTS85 was 4hp at 1500 rpm, the out put shaft came of the camshaft and turned at 750 rpm. Yanmar also made a smaller version NTS70R 3hp at 1800 output shaft at 900 rpm. I used a 20w\40 oil for years ,had no problems. Steve. |

Steve, Thanks, sounds great. I'm in Seattle, Washington in the states.. So it's 4hp not 8.5, I stand corrected. The clutch housing is installed with the fill nut upside down, not sure what that is about. With the clutch lever in neutral, the shaft spins as if in 'ahead', and if put in 'ahead' it stalls the engine. And so I figure that I need clutch plates? Not sure, as I said, a repair manual would help. It would also be nice to have access to parts if anything else goes out. I haven't done a thorough inspection, I'm sure more is needed. But what a beast of an engine, I'm sure I'll get 20 more years with good treatment. |

Brandon, the clutch housing has no clutch plates and simply contains two beveled gears and two smaller sun gears. when in ahead, the whole clutch barrel will spin, when going astern the clutch barrel will be locked up by the brake band and the sun gears will be spining inside the clutch barrel, the engine will work harder when going astearn. if the engine stalls in ahead position the gears might be locked up in the housing.to dismantle the clutch housing isn't a big job, not shure what you mean by fill nut. the instruction book i have gives a basic strip down procedure, is yours the same? I hope some of this makes sense. parts are getting hard to get, but the transmition just has bronze bushes, so can be made up easily. hope this helps. Steve |

That helps a lot actually. By 'fill nut' I meant the nut on the clutch housing for putting oil in. Since the whole housing turns when in 'ahead', it would make since as to why this is inaccessible. It must be stuck in 'astern'. I'll just need to dismantle it or at least turn it enough to access the oil fill, it's probably bone dry. Nice to hear that it doesn't have all kinds of parts, that's actually why I like the engine, it's just basic components which is why it's lasted so long. My instruction book has clutch adjustment instructions, but no dismantling instructions, please forward if you have any info. Thanks again Steve, I suppose if I'm in need of some parts, I can purchase them from you? -Brandon |

Brandon will get a copy of the book i have off to you when i can, might be a few days though. I think you will find, with carefull dismantling and a good clean, you won`t have to replace much. the bronze bush that runs on the water pump eccentric is usely worn through lack of oil, also you might have to replace both oil-seals on the clutch housing. I use 90 grade oil in the clutch housing , but have also seen a half oil and grease mix,or even stright grease used. those gears are only used when going astern. regards Steve. |

Hi Steve & Brandon! the HP ratings for these engines were reduced for Australia and NZ to get around import tariffs! So can't trust what was written on the manuals! I have a manual for the NTS70 series! cheers paul |

Afriend had one of these that he had in a small 22ft yacht, from memory the fuel pump was a little crude by todays standards being a ram type pump that you packed with shims to calibrate. I also remember the little rotof on the front of the engine to show the lube oil was circulating. When we wanted a laugh we used to read the engine manual. Japanese interpretation of English in the 1960s was quite funny to read. |

Just yesterday I got an NTS 85 with clutch assembly, is it a forward/ neutral or does it have reverse as well. The motor has been in a shed for 25 years with the decompression lever on, though I,ve put this in the run position there is no compression when I rotate the flywheel. Any manuals, drawings or workshop manual etc. would be a treasure if available. The motor is a 1965 model |

Hi, I have acquired an NTS70r recently. It runs well but has oil leaks out of almost every seal and flaky paint as well as some corrosion so I have started to dismantle it. I know this is an old thread but I was hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions. - there is no air cleaner, any suggestions on what I could adapt a filter box from? - trouble removing the large nut holding on the flywheel, its not reverse thread is it? - I have not removed the head but do the other bolts eg.crankcase/water jacket cover need to be tightened to a specific torque? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, or info on where to find a manual. Thanks! Bo |

Hi everyone. I have an NTS 85 and it blows oil out the cap above the oil cap/filller plug. What could be the reasons for this? Cheers Alex |

It might be a blocked crankcase breather or worn rings |
