Hi!
I got an old marine engine from a military base here in Finland. Anyone here knows nothing of its history and there is no manufacturer´s name/plate or anything. If you know where its made or any other info I would really appreciate that. :-)

All specs I know are these:
- 2 cylinder 2-stroke
- Carburettor: The Schebler model D
- Magneto: Ruthardt (used in british motorcycles also)
- It looks a lot like Gray Motor model "U", but there is also a lot of differences like intake manifold, ignition and water pump.
I tried to fire it and got few backfires, but I still got a lot of work to do until it works. Its in good condition and everything works. Its just that I´ll have to get the ignition timing right :-)
I´d like to get it work and find a decent boat where to mount it...

Having the engine backfire is a good sign.
That means that you have fuel , compression. a good crankcase and ignition.
Now all you need is to adjust them.
For starting the ignition timing MUST be retarded , that is the spark fires AFTER the piston reaches top dead centre. You can check this by taking out the spark plug and measuring with a small stick the Top Dead Centre of the piston stroke, . You might need to adjust the timing chain.
Have a look at the Technical Section of the web site to see the article on adjusting a Schebler carb by Richard Day.
It's all there.
Don't forget the cooling.
Actually, the REALLY best thing to do is take the engine to Louisiana and have the guys there show you how to make it run.

I have now got it running and waterpump seems to work fine, so I can run it safely. The problem at the first was that someone had repaired the magneto and made it to run wrong way (CCW). Running it to CW caused that it did give the spark only to one cylinder. And running it to CCW doesn´t give such a good spark. I took it to parts and fixed it so it can work in defaul way (CW) and gives a fine spark to both cylinders.
So, after repairing the magneto I got it running, but I´ll have to fix the timing chain gear of the magneto, because it slides and changes the timing whole time.
Unfortunately there is a few thousand miles between Finland and USA so I´ll have to satisfy to the local help... ;) |
