I bought a Fabuglas boat. Model# T. Serial# 659656M. There is a plate attached to the engine with the serial numbers. The word "motor" is in the french spelling "moteur". Moteur# 688-30. Moteur serial# 1923086. I was told that it is a Renault engine. I don't have a clue. The drive unit is a MerCruiser with no numbers. I'll try to post some pic's. Thanks, in advance, for any help you might be able to give.

That appears to be a "mercruiser engine package". Mercruiser used a Renault Inline 4 cylinder "68" engine from 1965 to 1968. Serial number range 1887079 thru 2049044. Mercruiser refered to it a s a model "60". There "should" be a Mercruiser nameplate on it. Most parts should be available. |

Does anyone know where I can find a manual for this motor? I have searched quite a bit, but I have only found manuals that cover MerCruiser packages powered by Ford or GM. Although theye did list dates of 1964-1968, I would still think that it does not cover my motor. It would be nice to find something written specifically for the Renault model 60. Any help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks a bunch. MMT |

Any of the normal manuals that covers 1965 and on, should have info for you. It has a mercruiser "O" outdrive. I have had a very difficult time finding parts, but, it is possible with a little patience. I have the same power package. If you have any problems, email me and I will give you my phone #. |

I'll check my mercruiser manual when I get home. I have one of those mercury 2 vol. deals as well as one of those after-market ones you are talking about. If mine covers that, I'd suggest getting one off of ebay. I have posted questions to many people listing the same and similar manuals to see if their's covers that model. |

I just got a response from one of the sellers, when I asked him specifically about your model and if he had any info on it and he said yes indeed, parts and service for an "O" drive. |

Okay, so both the original Mercury service manual for the stern drive mercruiser and the Clymer mercruiser stern drive shop manual cover that motor. So, get them where you will. |

All right! I too have the same package on a '68 Sea Swirl and have been wondering what it is. Now maybe I can get some parts for it! Does any one know if there is a Chevy or Ford 4 cyl that will bolt straight up to that transom? The ol Renault has a cracked water jacket that has been JB welded. Thanks fellas! |

Hello, I have a 1968 Correct Craft mustang with a 1968 Mercruiser "60" IO. The boat came with this as original, and I have not been able to find ignition parts? I need a coil, cap/rotor and points. Does anyone know of a replacement part as mercruiser has not made parts for a while for these models. Thanks for any info |

David, Try a NAPA Auto parts store. I owned an aluminum tri-hull that had a pair of those and I got my tune up parts from them. You could search the junkyards for them also. If I remember correctly that engine was used in a Renault R 10 or R 8. Check the library for an older Chilton |

David Smith, It's been awhile so I don't remember what my engine was but at the bottom of this page: http://geocities.com/sanclementeeric/glastron_v-195_gulfcruiser.htm , I have links to the parts info for my engine when I did the repairs. This should help you find some companies to go to. |

Hi, New member here. I just acquired a 1966 Glassmaster that looks a whole lot like matttye's Fabuglas. Same general hull shape, same motor, and even the trailer looks identical, down to the rust. The boat's floor and seats are gone, the cable controls are rusted away to nothingness, there are no front motor mounts (were there ever any?) and it has probably not seen water or run in 25+ years. On the plus side, the engine will turn over by hand, appears to have very low hours, the outdrive turns/raises/lowers and the trailer has new tires. I will post some pix when I get some decent ones. I'm guessing I need to change the oil, rebuild or at least clean out the carbs, and figure out how to get running water into the water jacket before I even think about trying to start this thing. The outdrive shifter cables appear to be rusted in neutral position; at least the prop turns freely. I have no experience with outdrives and only a little with outboards; have I said/assumed anything stupid? Thanks in advance, Dave |

I looked at that when I had the boat but it didn't seem practical. To much to modify and would have to mount a pump somewhere on the engine. The setup I had had the generator build into the vibrations damper, so there wasn't any belts available to lengthen for a pump assy. |

Andy: The one with the plugs through the rocker cover and the manifolds on opposite sides is the 90 hp version. The one in the picture above is the 80 hp version. The one with the cast iron block and the red alternator on the front is the 60 hp. Usually, the 90 hp has electro/hydraulic tilt and the 60 and 80 are hand crank. I'm not sure, but i think power tilt was optional on the 60 and 80 and could be put on if you had the parts. The hand crank always works, though, as long as you don't lose the crank. This is more than can be said for the power setup. The Mercruiser factory parts and service manuals for these are online at the iboats.com site and elsewhere. I'm looking for a lower unit if anybody has one to spare. |

I have decided to part out the engine and outdrive on my '66 Glassmaster w/ Renault "60" 688-30 motor and type "O" outdrive. I see Ray Griffith wants carbs (I have the dual side-drafts on the manifold with guard) and both VicTor Weider and Alan Muller want a lower unit. I currently have the whole outdrive, including a decent prop. Parts are "as-is" as they are coming off a boat I traded for in as-is condition (see description above), but I will take pix. AS THE FORMER SERVICE MANAGER FROM RENAULT MARINE . i AM FAMILIAR WITH THE 60 HP (O) DRIVE. THE BASE MOTOR IS THE SAME AS THE R5 RENAULT (LECAR) IT IS THE 1189CC MOTOR . THE 90 HP IS FROM THE LARGER RENAULT CAR R15 AND R17. THE MOTOR HAS A WET LINER THAT CAN BE RELACED . IT IS NOT A BORED BLOCK. THE FRONTCRANK HUB ON THE 60 , IS THE CHARGING UNIT. As I promised back in October, I am selling my Renault Mercruiser model 60 688-30 motor. It is complete, comes with internal transom mount as well as external transom mount and gimbal. The outdrive has already been sold. It can be found on eBay by searching eBay for some of these words: "Renault Mercruiser Model 60 688-30 Kiekhaefer Engine gimbal transom trim handle". There are high-res photos of everything there as well. Freight ship to anywhere in continental US. I am repowering my Glassmaster with an outboard and will post pix of that project on another thread if there is any interest. |

I have the 60 688-30 package on a '66 Seaswirl. It needs a lot of work. Is it even worth trying to restore the boat and motor/out drive, or am I better off parting things out and junking the hull? The hull and transom are in good shape, but the windshield is shot, seats are gone, top is missing, motor has a cracked/JB welded water jacket, out drive doesn't shift, etc....Got it to run a few years back. Prop was stuck in drive and it idled, revved, ran, pumped water. Honest opinions please. Thanks. |

hello .. I am looking at a 65 Dixie with 40HP Renault/Mercruiser outdrive I am told. The seller says that last timeon lake one of the hoses that control the shifting from F-N-R got pinched and a little fluid came out. It was stuck in Forward since. He said he replaced hose but thought there might be air in there preventing shifting. I know little of this particular setup. I'm assuming a mechanical cable engages the unit that this hose is coming from and pneumatically shifts the out-drive. Anyone have any info that might help? If it's an fairly easy fix, I might get the boat. It's in great shape other than this issue. Thanks for you time. -rich |

(email to [email protected] bounced) It will take some scrounging. Mercruiser manuals can be found on line. I think I have a pdf that covers that model. The engine is essentially the one used in the Renault 10, so gaskets and internal engine parts should be available from sources supporting these vehicles. As for Mercruiser-specific parts, you will have to hunt around for the dealers that maintain old stock. I have an 80 and a 90 hp Mercruiser, and the biggest issues for me have been the exhaust bellows and the drive shaft bellows. Even if you find them NOS, 45-50 year old rubber parts and not always in good shape, and a major failure of the big bellows floods the boat. I believe the model 60 has some parts in common with the largest Mercury outboards of the time. I believe you should have a pair of Tillotson sidedraft carbs similar to outboard carbs. Alan |

Thinking of bellows for drive shafts, we have found that if you can find the right size, car CV joint bellows, make good replacements. We have also been using them on gear lever to gearbox joints for some time. This trick has saved several tractor gearboxes from getting rain water in them. I don't know the exhaust bellows and how "customized" they are, but there might be something that could be adapted that is already made for automotive, or tractor/farm machinery, or maybe something like bellowed rubber hose, for example, sometimes seen used for flexible cable trunking on industrial machinery. Cheers Darryl |
