As I just took delivery on an Acadia engine and wish to clean it up and repair a few things. My first, well one of my first tasks is to remove the flywheel. As this engine probably has a gib key how do I go about removing it as it is flush with the shaft and flywheel? |

Have a look at Richard Day's article on how to remove a gib key

I found that it is useful to do a lot of prep work, cleaning out as much crud as you can and getting some penetrating stuff into the joint between the shaft and the flywheel.
Some people have used water as a release / penetrating agent. Finely pointed needles to pick away at the crud helps a lot.
But what ever you do, please DO NOT use heat on the flywheel - it never works and you'll bugger the flywheel.
You'll know when the key releases - the sound is different.
Some have tried a tap inward first then the pull outward with success.
Maybe one of Louisiana boys might have some suggestions too.
