This marine engine maker was in Syracuse N.Y. untill 1911 then moved to Schenectady N.Y. They made engs from 1 to 80 Hp, from 1 to 6 cylinders. The 1 Hp was a canoe engine by the Trade name "Brownie'. Don't find ads in old publications and none of these old timers are in marine museum inventories ? Any one have any info ??? Thanks Richard |

Richard, I have one of the 2HP models, I think you saw it at Calvert a couple of years ago. I also saw some pictures recently of a larger BF Brown single cylinder engine.

Richard, I have a 1974 letter from the Schenectady County Public Library regarding some research they did on the B.F. Brown Gas Engine Company. It indicates that the company did not appear in directories after 1913. I have scanned the letter into Adobe Acrobat, but it has become a very large file and I am not sure how to "optimize" to reduce the file size in Adobe (if anyone else know, please tell me). I will email the letter to you, and can email to anyone else that wants it. Also, my engine nameplate contains: BROWNIE MANUFACTURED BY THE B.F. BROWN GAS ENGINE CO 520 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. HP 2 The 520 is stamped in as the serial number. Regards, Andrew |

Andrew, The e-mail letter came through just fine, with cable connection it took all of a second or two to come in. Thanks The illustration above of the type 2, shows removable heads, and from the oiling instructions would probably date it 1909-1910?how about those cool primer cup spark plugs ! Seems manufacturing trend in those days was from head type to headless, wonder if your headless was one of the last ones made 1911-1912?? |

I just received a copy of December 2,1909 Post Standard,Syracuse NY article from a friend researching B F Brown engine co. with the Syracuse NY central library. Header states: Large Demand For Engines. New Brown Co. working nights to fill orders. The B F Brown Gas Engine Co. which was recently incorporated with a capital of $50,000.Factory has been established on the third floor of the Hall and McChesney building at South Franklin and Walton Streets.( 402 South Franklin st.) The plant is being operated at capacity ... men are working until 9 o'clock every night( to fill orders). Howard Gardenier Secretary Treasurer;and RPI graduate came from Chicago. B F Brown is the General Manager. The Directors include H T, H G and C A Hull Jr. from Morristown NJ.and George Cory of New York.An additional clipping dated Feb. 23, 1910 states Mr Brown was in charge of the companies large display at the NYC boat show and the company had exibited at the Boston Boat Show earlier in the year. Charles Barber (Barber Brothers Engine Co) had attended the NYC show but had not displaed engines. H J Leighton and P H Brennan saying that business was too brisk at their respective engine firms to commit to a NYC show display as did John Sweet of the Straightline Engine Company.. all of Syracuse NY |

I'll look- I think they built steam early and used for power generation- will have to look to my notes. John Sweet was the early expert in engine trade in Syracuse.... |
