I have a Sea Prince with a geared (not impeller) water pump that continues to overheat. I have set the points, timing, plug gaps etc. Replaced all the rubber hoses, greased the pump heavily via the grease cups and the engine still overheats. The pump will not pick up water at idle despite bypassing the sea strainer and running a short hose from the raw water intake to the pump. There is no thermostat. The engine runs at about 180 deg while underway but only for a few minutes then begins to overheat again. Do I need a larger than 3/4 intake hose? There has been rust in the block...any ideas on getting all that out? Help

I am in the process of rebuilding two Kermath Sea Prince engines (1934 vintage) and each have the bronze geared water pump. I picked up the boat several years ago (32' Hatley Craft Runabout) and from what I recall the water lines that were used were 3/4". My first thought was to have you bypass the oil cooler as that can rust up quite easily, however, it appears you have already tried that. Have you checked the wear on the water pump shaft bushings? I noticed both of my water pumps have quite a bit of wear on these bushings (cast into the water pump housing)so I am wondering if this might cause the pump to lose efficiency at low speeds. As far as the rust goes, have you tried to hook up a garden hose and run water through the block? If you get "good" flow through the motor out the exhaust I would say you rust problem is not severe, and the water pump is the culpret. However, if the flow is way down, you may have to pull the head and get into the block and manually clean out the water passages. I assume all the water piping is correctly connected? I could use a picture of how all that goes together if you have one. It's been several years since I disassembled the motors. Bob, I got the overheat problem solved by pulling the head and manually cleaning the cooling passages. I had already cleaned out the oil cooler and the fittings I was able to access with the engine still in the boat. Thanks for your info.

The pic below was when the engine was out for inspection when I bought the boat. The boat is currently being stored for winter so when I get it out I should be able to get better pics of the water line routing or anything else you might need.



I recently purchased another engine that is complete minus a few odds and ends, the carb, starter, some piping etc. I hope to use it as a spare but might want to ask you for resources for parts etc. in the future.

I am looking for a Stromberg SFM 3 carb and flame arrestor for a 01-09-49 Kermath Sea Prince. Carb is only required to be cosmetically correct for Marime Museum display purposes.
