If the engine has been a runner and the valve ceased, you may not be running an oil with enough sulphur or other lubricating properties. As the sulphur is being removed from most of our oils, we are seeing a rash of sticking valves especially in flat head engines. You may be able to remove the spark plug and if the exhaust valve is open, spray a little penetrating fluid at the valve and stem. likewise from the bottom side of the guide from the tappet cover access. Give it some time. If this frees the valve, get an additive for your oil or make sure you change to an oil with sulphur or an adequate replacement. Delo 400 30 WT oil has always been good until now. If you can find a supplier that has some that has been around for a while, it may still contain sulphur. There are several other good oils for these engines too, some synthetics also. If this was not a runner and is out of the boat, get a hammer! Cheers, Lew "The West Coast Sterling Guy" |
