You seem to have an engineroom full of Glenniffers. There were quite a few of them on the NZ coast in pleasure boats. At the time a lot of new boats in the UK were having them fitted and we followed suit. None used commercially here though. I knew an old chap who had a Fairmile (ex warship 112') to which he had fitted two eight (in line) cylinder DH8 models -160 hp at 900 rpm-in the late '40s. Probably the same as in your picture Ran smoothly but when I knew the boat in the mid '60s they were always breaking down. They were eventually scrapped in the '70s. They had a clerestory combustion chamber (opposed valves horizontal) which was an interesting arrangement also a feature of the Russell Newberry engines.
Alas there appear to be none surviving here any more.
Tell us more bout the installation.

Interesting photo ! I have a DCV12 in a Humber keel houseboat (not the original fitting). It is proably one of the only working Gleniffer DCV12's that still exists and it sits along side 2 huge Gardner 6Ls. I guess someone liked old engines ?

That picture is from the engineroom of "nøkk" in Stavanger Norway. I have worked on theese engines and they werent breaking down when i was there at least. Though the DC8's in the picture suffered from too small cooling water pumps. What the picture doesen't show however is the TWO DCV12's right behind the photographer that's powering the pumps. (It's a firevessel)

The ship is currently undergoing resoration work to the deck and wheelhouse. But all engines are working last i heard.

2x Gleniffer DC8's for propulsion
2x Gleniffer DCV12's for firepumps
2x Lister 2cylinder engines for lights and electricity.

I have two Gleniffer Gearboxes fitted to my Gardner 6L3's (the type fitted to the DB and DC series.) I would appreciate any cutaway drawings, illustrations showing parts breakdowns, or other technical specifications or drawings to assist in rebuilding them.

ref the query from 'Wichmann' regarding his GLENNIFFER diesels--Glenniffer started off as 'SCOTT ENGINES' in 1908. Under new ownership in 1912, the name changed to GLENNIFFER MOTORS Ltd and the works address moved to Anniesland, in Glasgow. In 1963 GLENNIFFER was bought out by KELVIN DIESELS. GLENNIFFER's main engines were the DB range (4.75in bore X 6in stroke), the DC and DH ranges, both 6in bore X 7in stroke.

Hi Vince, I don't know if you are still visiting this forum. I rebuilt a Gleniffer box earlier this year and put up some information on the Canalworld forum:

Hope this helps, they're an interesting box to work on

Richard

Thanks Richard. I went to the Canal Forum and registered (I had a devil of a time with their verification question as i have never boated in the UK.) I will crack my gearboxes open in a few months (winter project) and appreciate the detailed drawings, pictures, and descriptions. I may very well come back with more questions once I have them apart.

Hi Greyghost.

A perennial problem for old engines is finding spares. I'm about to embark on some work on a DB2, fortunately I have a damaged DB4 here which is likely to provide a few pieces. Even so, it's going to need some creative engineering to find other parts

I remember Massey Shaw's DC8 engines from Salvage Squad
