Hey Guys, I worked at the site of Long Island Motor Works as a teen from 1982-1987. The motor works had pretty much shut down in the early 50's but the machine shop was mostly intact. All belt drive from the ceiling with a power unit in the back. When I was there the place was a shop restoring antique cars. The son of the guy who made these engines was still around (in his 80's then) and would make custom driveline parts for the antique cars from time to time. It was a cool old place. There was only one of the small engines in storage in one of the buildings. I ended up with most of the core boxes for casting these engines, some of which I still have. Back then with no internet, finding interested people was tough. I gave away a pickup truck load of boxes to some marine club who auctioned the whole lot for $10. Nice pics. I had never seen one of the larger engines. Jack |

I was excited to find the posts on Long Island Motor Works. I have a single cylinder type S 1 serial #616 5HP at 1000 Rpm. The freeze out plugs have a Pat'd 4 8 12 embossed on them. Is there any way of knowing how many of these engines were made or what year they were built? The carb was really rough with corrosion and maybe not useable. The mag was butchered and battery applied across the mag points with a delco coil. One rocker was bent and I straightened it out. I removed the head and machined the seats and valves. The bore looks good and the engine should be capable of running. Typically what would this have been used in? I'd appreciate anything in the way of information you could offer. Thanks |

I have a 4 cylinder "Long Island Marine Engine" mfg by "Long Island Motor Works". Complete with transmission and manifold. Appears to be in good condition. Make an offer and come and get it within the next three weeks. Located in Vermont. Thanks. Regards, Andrew

Ned, Yes, I still have it and it's available. I had to move it from where it was, but I still have it. Let me know if you have any questions or want to come see it. Thanks! Andrew |

Andrew, I think I would be interested in coming to take a look. I so have to say that for the next couple of months I am pretty tied up, but if you still have it would like to come look at it when things quiet down for me a bit. Ned |

Ned, That's fine. I have moved it so it's not urgent for me now. You can email direct at amenkart @ marineengine.com (without the spaces) if I don't reply here. Regards, Andrew |

Very good Andrew. I be will be in touch. Im curious, were you ever able to finish restoring that 1924 Palmer NL4 (I think?) that was mine about 35 years ago? |

An NL4? 4 cylinder? I have an NL2, two cylinder with two new cylinders casting and a new manifold casting. I have never had an NL4. The cylinders and manifold were cast by a guy in Maryland. A friend of Dick Day's, but I can't remember his name. He used to go to the Tuckahoe show. A retired machinist as I recall. He did a beautiful job with the castings. He made the foundry patterns. If someone remembers his name please post it or send it to me. Thanks! |

Right! Thanks Ernie. As I recall his son was an engine enthusiast also, so hopefully he is safeguarding the patterns. |

Ahhh Yes, an NL2. You got that from the Jersey shore about 20 - 30ish years ago. It was mine. |
