I just purchased a nice 42' Monk that has a old Grey Marine V8 Fireball 401ci Model V8C-280 onboard. I went to give it an oil change and found that the dipstick the previous owner used isn't even close to original, looks like he just used something to fill the hole with. I realized this after 8 quarts of oil and it finally registered on the stick. After syphoning it back out I now am stuck with my original question. How much oil goes into this engine? Thanks.

HI LARRY
THE APPROXIMATE WET CAPACITY IS 6 TO 8 QUARTS, DEPENDING ON INSTALLATION ANGLE PER THE OPERATOR'S
MANUAL. GRAY MARINE, INC. MAY HAVE PARTS.

Thanks for the info, I have sent Grey Marine Parts an e-mail over a week ago requesting info about getting a manual, haven't heard back. I think I will give them a buzz tommarow. Nonetheless, thanks for the info. It gives me a start. I will have a look at the angle next time I am down at the dock.

Larry,
I have the "Operators Handbook" and it references changing and checking the oil several times. Problem is it always says to fill it to line on dipstick. Never actually gives an amount.

Hehe, that actually seems like a typical operators manual. I will check the angle tonight and post it. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. To get a pretty acurate angle reading was harder than I thought. It looks like it is sitting about 10 to 11 degree's up from the stuffing box/keel. Hope this helps thanks.

I have a '64 Graymarine VC-280 (401 Buick) in my boat. I measured the dipstick; it is about 10" in overall length from the stop. The full mark is 9" down and the add mark is 9 1/2" down. Hope that helps.

Dave-
I appreciate the help. That worked well. As I suspected it was incorrect. Useing your measurements I marked the stick and all is well. Do you by chance have any of the manuals on that engine of yours? The model you listed sounds the same as mine and I have been hitting dead ends on finding mainly the service manual for it. The only fifference on the model is the plaque on the engine read V8C-280.

Yes, I have the original owner's manual. I have seen them available on the web.

Curious about The Monk. I have a 43 ft Tolly with the Nailhead fireballs. the tolly is also Monk design. Very curious indeed.

Yep the ten inches and eight quarts is about right. I have the same shorty dipstick.

Yep, the manual is on line.
Yep, the manifolds are available

What the heck happened to mine??
Some one moved the timing mark
I have a pair of them and would love conversation about the timing sequence and related subjects.

I looked through my original owners manual and it says 8-10 quarts depending on the angle.
