Morgan sailboat engine. Engine at times sounds like rods knocking. I can run the engine up and down the RPM spectrum and noise will go away during acceleration and come back. I am a master ASE auto technician diesel is new but interesting to me. I have replace all injectors with no luck on the noise. I replaced all fuel lines and filters as preventative maintenance. I just had fuel injector pump overhauled and am in process of instalation. Question? is there seals that go in the end of the injector pump where the olive lines go? Are their seals that go where the live lines go into the injector? Or is it metal to metal? |

Hi Superdave, the injector pipes and the fittings to the pump are metal to metal olives, if you are using a CAV fuel filter the pipes will have a rubber washer with a brass pressure ring under the nut on entry to the filter, re your problem have you checked the spill timing is correct? these engines do have a bit of piston slap/noise until hot, but some still give a bit of noise when hot it depends on the piston/bore clearance when made, also you can get a bit of knocking if the indirect injection chamber is sooted up,this is caused by the engine running under light load for long periods, but this can clear when under load if it is not to bad, otherwise it is a case of cleaning them out, and to save you a lot of work you can fill the indirect chambers with caustic soda and leave for a while, with the head off of course :-) Keith |

I have a Volvo MD5B motor in my moored boat with a fuel problem caused by rain water getting into the diesel fuel. Tests done on the boat indicate no output from the Fuel Injector Pump so I have removed it and the Injector and want to check them in my workshop. I have schematic diagrams of both devices but am not sure how the pump works. I have tested it by rigging up a manual lever to activate the roller and plunger on the pump bottom but nothing comes out the top outlet when I put some diesel fuel in the inlet. Anyone have any comments on what is likely to causing it not to pump properly, noting that immediately before it got fed the water/diesel mixture the motor worked fine? Also with the Injector I have pulled it apart and cleaned out all its components OK except the 4 very small holes in the injector nozzle may be blocked. Any suggestions on how to clean these holes? |
