Some years ago I bought this 12 Gray FS 4 cylinder marine engine...and now the time has come to restore it. I like to restore to original, which I need some help on that. What color would a FS engine be?? There is a broken up SIMMS mag on the engine...is that the correct mag for this engine?? The carb is a Kingston Model T carb, guessing that isn't correct but worked. Here’s an update on the Gray 12hp FS Marine engine. It’s been torn apart and cleaned. Many pieces sandblasted and in primer now. The S/N was stamped on both sides of the flywheel, it’s 26489. I will start tomorrow welding together a cart to put under this engine and some parts will get painted too. I can keep posting pictures and details on this engine if anybody out there would like me too. If I don’t hear anything then the next posting will be sometime this summer when the engine goes out on tour!!! THANKS Steve in Iowa

I'll go ahead and keep posting a status report and a picture or two on the progress. Last weekend I worked welding this cart together to sit the engine to make it easier to move around. This is a must if it's going to be on tour this summer at engine shows!! This weekend I hope to start painting parts and get this cart into primer and maybe painted. The green on the wheels is just tape, this was taken right before I painted the wheels.

The cart is now painted along with the crank case pan and transmission pan. I will have the engine block in primer this weekend and painted by next weekend.

Yesterday (Valentines Day) the engine block got painted, and if there is a red that should be used on Valentines Cards then this red is it. The three pictures below show the three stages I went through to get to my final coat of paint. I first chemically stripped the paint off the block and then ground or wire brushed the iron. Some plastic filler was used if there were large casting flaws. The picture of the black engine block is epoxy primer. The next day I applied some polyester filler primer, the gray color block. Polyester filler is a thick type primer that fills many small holes and smoothes out rough casting marks. After waiting a couple days I then final sanded the polyester primer, then a coat of epoxy sealer, then top coat with the red paint you see. This red is color of Gray single cylinder gas engines that were produced at the same time from the Gray factory. In the first picture, the black engine block, you can see my 1 ¾ Gray single cylinder engine block in the back ground; it’s the red item upper left corner. I’m also restoring it at the same time as the marine engine.

Took this picture this morning of the engine now sitting on the cart all painted up. The head is just sitting on the engine, still have to find a magneto for this engine to replace the broken one on the engine.....when moving it to the sale where I bought this engine years ago they rolled the engine off the cart and destroyed the mag. I'm hoping to get a mag for the engine soon!! Also working on putting a brass prop on the output shaft...but will install ball bearing in the prop's hub so it will spin but stop as soon as somebody touches it. Currently there are 86 high crown bolts on this engine, all painted black. I'm missing about 12 of them and will be hand making them on the lathe soon. High Crown bolts and nuts are period correct for this engine.
