I would like to access the area where the valves are located... accessible through the holes where the spark plugs are normally placed. Is it possible to remove a cover plate or something simple in order to get at the valves on a P-60? Please forgive my naive question as I am pretty new to all things mechanical but eager to learn. |

Don't know how much clearance you have around the engine. If you were to remove the carburetor behind it you will find a valve cover plate with two cap screws which hold it in place. Note the forward end has an approx 1/2" El which normally is connected to the backfire trap with a piece of Plastic hose. This is for the the PCV system. When you replace the valve cover plate make sure you put this el at the flywheel end of the engine. You can find photos of the backfire trap in the section on the P-60. Make sure you don't lose the washers which seal the cap screws which hold the valve cover in place as they seal that area from oil leakage. Make sure you don't mess up the gasket on the valve cover otherwise you will have an oil leak. You can make a new gasket without much trouble as it is either cork or paper. What are you looking for in the valve area?? |

Thanks Richard. Not sure that I am properly describing my objective. Appreciate your patience and ongoing great advice! I am thinking that I may have a couple of stuck valves in #3 and #4 cylinders. The engine has run fine for several years but I let it go without running for several months and now find that I have no compression is #3 and #4 cylinders. The engine starts and runs but it is very weak and it tends to die if I try to accelerate. It is interesting to me that it will even run under load (forward or reverse) with transmission engaged. Hoping that I can free up the stuck valves (if that is actually the problem) without having to remove the engine. Always open to suggestions. |

Sorry, You can see both intake and exhaust valve through the spark plug opening. I suggest you make up a simple tool out of a 6" length 1/4" dia steel rod. bend one end about 75 degrees so you have an L shaped end about 1/2" long. This will allow you to tap lightly more or less in the center of the valve to see if any are stuck open. Cranking the engine you should see the valve motion. If you use one of the small high intensity flash lights it should be easy to see if they are stuck open. I would look for evidence of rust or moisture which could account for a sticking valve. |
