Gray Motor Company came out with the Model "U' in 1912, the water pump was a rotary and driven by the timer shaft on the front of the engine, in 1916 the water pump was moved to the rear and used a piston pump, another change was in 1918 the inspection covers were round, the engines stayed pretty much the same until Gray ceased mfging two cycle engines in 1927.
This 1924 ad shows one new option of having a magneto ignition system driven by the timer shaft .
The engine above is 1918-1927 unless serial numbers can be found stamped in flywheel rim or on the side of the cylinder.

I have seen one of these Gray engines on a Forest srevice fire pump in rural Downeast Maine. |

I have two of these engines but never have found a serial number anywhere. One has the spark and throttle quandrant on the aft end above the pump and the other doesn't. Bob Merriam told me he lived one summer at a camp for kids with one of these engines and it was very reliable and an easy engine to live with. |
