While troubleshooting my problem of sticking exhaust valves in my recently rebuilt P-60, I found that there seems to be water in the top end of the engine (which would help explain the sticky valves). I think the head gasket is OK; engine runs fine (when valves are freed up) with good compression in all cylinders (again, when all the valves are working right). I'm wondering how to tell if the water is back-tracking from the exhaust pipe, or if my exhaust manifold is bad (I'm sure hoping it's not that!) Is there a way to tell without taking the manifold off and visually examining it?
The exhaust system is a water-jacketed pipe, which externally looks fine, but is almost 40 years old and so may not be intact internally. The water injection point is right at the level of the exhaust manifold, which I believe is a no-no; no vertical gradient to keep water out of the manifold.} |
