I have an Americat 22 Cat Boat with a Palmer P60. In the 20 plus years I've owned this boat the majority of engine problems have been related to bad fuel. Lately though I've noticed on the rare occasion that I give her full throttle the clutch will slip (or disengage?), as soon as I ease off it catches agian and works normal. The transmission lever clicks in place when put into forward as it should. I only run the engine long enough to get from my slip to the lake (10 minutes) so I don't think the transmission would have time to get overheated. When under sail I keep the transmission in forward to prevent the prop from spinning could this cause the clutch to loose it's grip? |

Funny how these things happen. I just had the same problem today. Same symptoms and usage. I'll leaf thru my Palmer manual and see what I come up with. |

YOu need to rotate the OXKB transmission part no.28 one or two slots clockwise. To do this simply back off screw 76 sufficient to remove the tang on the end of the screw from the slot it is currently in. Carefully keep track or the slot it is in and try rotating one slot clockwise facing the flywheel end of the engine. Try the forward lever and see if it locks in a little firmer. Don't run the engine and don't rotate the reverse gear. If the shift lever seems a little stiffer when it snaps in gear then lock down screw #76 but as you screw it in feel carefully you are putting the little tang on the end of the screw in the slot in 28. Once you are sure you have it in place then lock down the no,76 screw and put the cover back on the reverse gear and see if you have cured the problem. If not try one more slot which should be more than enough. all that is happening is there is some wear in the clutch plates in the reverse gear and tightening the no. 28 disk is making up for that slight wear. I posted this solution some weeks back with the diagram but cannot find where it is now recorded. Sorry, someone may remember. Good luck and don't panic. This problem has nothing to do with the reverse adjustment so don't mess with that adjustment. |

This post is directed to Richard Day. Greetings to you, and thank you for your years of faithful work! You have requested Palmer serial numbers for registration purposes. I have owned a BH25 since 1957. serial number:3704457. Is there an email address where I might reach you? Many thanks, Tony du Bourg |
