The current issue of the Antique & Classic Boat Society publication, Rudder, has a long article on the history of the Red Wing Marine Engine company and lists the two people who purchased the assets. They sell info and parts for the engines. The names are - Harry Munson, 612/388-3391 and Virgil Mischke, 612/388-3045 Great article Andrew - maybe you could get permission to post it. |

Bob, Thanks... I haven't gotten my issue yet, but I am looking forward to seeing it. There seems to be a lot of interest in Red Wing.

Andrew, A lot of that interest in Red Wing must be mine. I am an active participant on this board, and Red Wing's are my favorite topic. In the last 4 years I have tracked down and bought over 25 Red Wings, and I am always looking to buy a few more. If any one has one they want to talk about, swap photos, or sell, give me a buzz. By the way, if anyone has an early catalog, showing the 2 cycle engines, I would sure like to own one. William Schaller 1949 Pioneer Road Red Wing, MN 55066 [email protected] 651-388-1749

Bill, Yes... thanks for all the great information you have shared on the site. I know you are a dedicated Red Wing collector... even taking vacation to drive to NJ in a Minessota winter to pick up a couple engines!! Have you seen the Red Wing article in RUDDER? Who wrote it? Keep up the good work. Eveyone has their own approach to collecting, but it seems that one of the most rewarding ways to do it is specialize in one manufacturer and really become an expert in that line of engines. Dick Day with Palmer, and Larry Mahan with Wolverine come to mind. Most importantly... have fun! Regards, Andrew |

I am looking for a Red Wing Model D (Baby Doll) marine engine 4 cyl. 2 3/4 x 4. I restored a 16 ft. power launch built by Lawley's in 1927. The small boat build book, which is in Mystic Seaport's collection, shows the launch was built with the above engine. I am donating the launch to the San Diego Maritime Museum and would like to install the original engine for it. The museum will use the launch as a static display and the engine need not be runnable. Do any of you have one for sale or any leads to offer in my search? Charles Darragh 619.224-8584 [email protected] |

Can someone help me with some specification for a Red Wing Model D four cylinder. I have recreated a complete set of plans for a 18' Hacker runabout and finished all the drawings, lofting and so forth but He originally spec'd out the boat for this engine and I would like to know HP, RPM, weight and so forth. Anything you can give me would be a help. If you could email me or post I would appreciate it. If this site does not automatically notify when a post comes in I would prefer an email. Thanks [email protected] |

I am considering putting my 2 matched 6 cyl. Red Wing engines on the auction block. They have been rebuilt to original specs and purr like kittens. They were installed by the Canadian govt. in my 1941 34' Chris Craft. If interested, call me......Art.631-775-8026 |

I am again considering investing on refurbishing my 1954 30' Philip Rhodes Truant (see attached photo)and one of the major issues is its engine. The only reference I have comes from copy of the plans I got from the Mystic Seaport Museum where a Red Wing Meteor is mentioned. |

Looking for information about a Red Wing engine serial # 91528. From the picture it looks like a C4 style but I am not sure. The owner states that it is an 18hp motor and from the picture I think that is right. I am looking into restoring a 17 ft. launche without a motor and I came across this motor and wondering about it. Tourqe curve, max RPM prop sizing etc. would help. Frank Petran, [email protected] or 262-284-2650 Thanks |

My brother-inlaw recently acquired a Redwin engine item he wants to restore to "like new" condition for home display. It is a crank case cover with raised REDWING lettering on it. He said the party he got it from believed that it came from a six-cylinder (3 and 3), flathead-type engine with dual ignition from the mid-1920s. The rest had long since gone to scrap. So, I'm looking for proper colors to repaint the piece once it is cleaned up. Thanks, Ros |

Most of the 4 cycle motors were painted industrial gray or less common a medium red. many earlier 4 cycle had gray motors, and red flywheels. If it is an early motor before 1920s, or a 2 cycle, then it could be gray, black, red or even green. Does he have a picture? Personally, if it was mine, I would paint it red, with black outlining the letters. My second choice would be gray, with black letters. Bill Schaller |

Here are the pictures of Mike's Red Wing. It looks like a nice complete engine, and he should be able to go to the OLD Marine Engine store, and get a copy of the PALMER GAS ENGINE HANDBOOK to help him run it.

New here hello all. Recently have gotten a RedWing Thorobred single cyl. engine. NO 32056 K 4-5 hp. Looks to be complete but the piston is stuck tight as can be and the bore may be heavily rusted. The goal is to fix it up and get it running . Any information about this engine will be nice to have as well as parts sources. Thanks |

William - if it's one thing I've learned - it is patience for the challenge of a stuck piston. There are lots of guys who have rescued engines with stuck pistons so don't despair. The first step is to get the engine apart without buggering up stuff, so you can get at the bottom of the piston. How far down the bore is the piston stuck? Please resist the temptation to push down on the piston through the spark plug hole- you'll damage the piston for sure. Soaking the whole sheebang is not a bad idea if you can do it - the big question is what to soak it in. To inspect the bore above the piston, I've soldered a small flashlight bulb onto a pair of twisted wires and lowered the bulb into the bore though the spark plug hole to see what I could see. I've found that in general the bore is in pretty good shape, not nearly as bad as you'd think. Some folks have used water as a penetrating fluid on the theory that rust ( iron oxide) attracts water molecules. Never used that myself , but I have used a weak (5:1) mix of white vinegar (acetic acid) and water to soak parts in. The other point is , once the parts start to move, please be even more patient and move them back and forth a little more each time, rather than trying to do it in one step. You'll have to be creative on making up some jigs as well. Can you post some pictures? That would help the OME community here collectively work on this project with you. miro |

Back about 1990 Harry Munson paid me a visit and picked up some Redwing parts. We had a great visit and a few weeks late a small wall clock in the shape of a Redwing one lunger arrived in the mail. Harry had made it for me and I have it hanging on the wall over my computer. Is Harry still alive? Have not heard a word about him in years and when I saw Bob's note I thought someone would know. |

I haven't had a chance yet to take any photos but I will. The head came off without much trouble but the bore looks to be a real mess. The piston looks to be at or very near to BDC. When I get to it I will release the con rod from below and take the whole cyl assembly off for disassembly. I had really good luck with a UNITED cyl and a very stuck piston by soaking the whole thing in rust disolver. After a few weeks it came apart without alot of resistance. Also have a GRAY MARINE one lunger 2 stoke . It is missing the mixer/check valve. Found this one at the dump !!!! |

Need some info on my motor. Red Wing Thorobred 10hp #2123D. It is mostly complete, looks like I may be lacking a carburator. It may still be lurking around the shop somewhere, what should I look for? Model? Are there any parts lists or diagrams for these motors available?

It's likely a Zenith 1 inch carb. If you're going to run the engine, you'll probably have to tilt the engine on its mountings so that the float bowl is level. You should be able to put in a couple of big shims. miro |

Richard asked; "Is Harry still alive? Have not heard a word about him in years and when I saw Bob's note I thought someone would know." Yes, Harry is alive and well. About two weeks ago I purchased some parts from him for my Waukesha 140GK engine. The parts were NOS still packed in cosmolien. Harry is a fantastic guy and a real genius. |
