I posted this on the early 2 clynder area but I beleave it realy belongs here as the engine is not that early. I have just purchased an unfinished little steel tugboat 20'. It has a 2-71 Gray Marine engine and transmission. The shifting into forward was almost impossible but thanks to some advice on another thread it is now free'd up. The problem I have is that the gear change was never hooked up and I don't think this can be operated with a morse cable setup. Anyone out there have any ideas or drawings/photos of a good gear change setup? |

Hi Capt, presuming the gearbox has a spline with a keyway, a female collar is needed for this end.On the end of the collar a vertical lever (approx 6" to 8") or a length of bar to give it clearance from any obstruction then the lever. From the top of the lever a horizontal connecting rod to underneath where the gearchange lever is situated. This is connected to one end of a right angle (L shaped) lever(set at 45\135 degrees),the centre of this being fixed to the bulkhead or structure so as to pivot,on the other end a verticle connecting rod going to another lever(6" to 8")which is situated horizontally off the end of the gearchange handle so as to transfer movement of the g.c.handle through the linkages to the gearbox(phew!). Its a bit difficult to explain mate & i will try & post some photos, hope this helps. Mark. |

Thanks Mark, I can almost envision the system. I already have the first vertical lever. At the moment it had a 30" pipe bolted to it, give a nasty throw from forward to reverse. |
