Hello, My new boat has a Sabb 2H-75 and I am giving it a once over. Does anyone know the appropriate fuel filter cartridge to buy? Also if anyone has some general comments about this engine and the variable pitch prop, I would appreciate any input. thanks a lot |

I have a 1973 2H twin cylinder 16 HP Sabb diesel with variable pitch - is that the same? It just seems to keep going! (Touch wood). The variable pitch is OK but I s'pose a potential problem is rope round it as it never stops. Fuel filter wasn't a problem to find but I'd have to get to the boat to check that - weather so lousy in UK nowadays (summers are history I think) that I don't know when that will be! |

Fuel Filter for a Sabb 2 H. In the USA contact Bill Miller ,[email protected]. (352) 589-2882. for a replacement cartridge. Replace it once and forget it assuming you have at least a standard a 2 to 10 micron filter in front it and suggest you put a 100 micron old fashion glass- screen filter in from of your 2-10 and especially in front of your lift pump. Guy: my offer still stands- Long Island wind has not been great but the weather is. |

Thanks for the input. I've got filters in the mail. I think the engine is a 74, it seems to have been well maintained. I have a Fram filter before the engine but i will also consider adding a glass filter before the lift pump. as to the prop, what would be the result of it getting completely bound with a rope or something, as far as damage to the mechanism or engine? |

Fuel Filters on my Sabb 2H: Let me give you my sequence: Fuel tank, hand squeeze pump, tractor glass bowl filter (100 micron), lift pump and screen, Parker Hannifin 2 micron filter and water separator, Sabb fuel filter-( I should get rid of it) and finally the injector pump. The hand squeeze pump has many uses- including dealing with heeling and motoring low on fuel. On rope catching the prop- Did it once backing up- shut down the engine- but no damage. I would check your clutch adjustment- a story in itself. If you decide to take apart the prop assembly, write good notes. I forgot the details-mark the two clam shells- Interesting assembly. |

I also got a rope round the prop quite recently - so easy to do if you drop concentration for a second. Had a tender in tow, came up to the mooring buoy under power, needed to give it just 3 seconds reverse - obviously the tender had nudged up a bit close to the stern.....suddenly a large clunk and the engine ground to a halt - the tender was now half under the boat and filling with water!! Sent my son down with a knife (actually he volunteered), cut it free and (touch wood) everything seems fine. Actually I suppose that could happen with any sort of propeller but its a bit more likely with this set up. |

Thanks for all the input, guys. This is actually my first diesel, right now I am just trying to take care of the very basics before I go in the water. once Im floating I will probably add some additional filters and tinker around a little bit more, but hopefully that wont involve taking apart the prop assembly, at least not for a while! What oil should I use? my last boat had a 4 stoke outboard so this is all very new to me. Thanks a lot |

I used a NON synthetic 15/40 diesel engine oil last time. Thinks that's about right. |

Sabb engine Oil and spare prop. The operator's manual calls for 30 weight diesel engine oil- but maybe the multi-weight oil is better for older engines. On a spare prop- try hounding Pat's Marine Diesel in Seattle,1080 West Ewing Pl, 206-285-0184. This past Spring I bought a spare Sabb 2H. He may have parts. Call during lunch. This is definitely a shop you want when you need serious help. |

Update, white smoke Hey, thank you everyone for your help. a few days ago i finally cranked her up after changing fuel and oil filters, changing oil, flushing tank... she seemed to run good although i didnt give her much time to run. today i started her again, it took several tries on the crank. on starting she belched out some black soot. Sounds good running but there is a smoke problem. at idle to mid range it is barely noticeable, but on really opening up there is a continuous output of white smoke, with an oily sheen in the exhaust water. I ran her for 30 - 45 minutes, even after heating up the problem persisted. from the research i have done im guessing it is a fouled injector, the smoke being unburned diesel. perhaps I introduced some dirt into the line while swapping the secondary filter? does anyone have any other ideas? thanks for any input |

White Smoke 40 years ago I seem to remember that white smoke is caused by a head gasket leak- water. |

Well my main concern is that when I bought it about a month ago We ran it for 10 or 15 minutes and I didnt notice such smoke. Perhaps it just wasn't opened up all the way. Planning on going in the water the end of this week, maybe running it under load for several hours will help. the boat has been on the hard for three years, I think the owner ran it occasionally but it hasnt been run under load in a long time. anyways, i love this engine, cant wait to get to know it better. also the hand crank is such a great feature. |
