The regatta will be run this year Oct 25/26 We(The Black Hands)would like the formatt to change so we have a two day event with a stronger lean towards vintage machinery, marine and stationary "stuff",maybe mini swap meet on saturday and less bangles ,sweater and socks ,if you get my drift. We would appreciate any imput asap as it takes just a poofteenth of effort to coordinate all this Thank you all Todd Vidgen ,Tressurer, Davistown Putt Putt Regatta and Wooden Boat Festival PS What do you think about things like wood chop various comps etc PPS The Putt Putt Challange will be a handicaped race this year so Puddle ,Allwood,Gunnar, etc will start quite some time after the others, I,m thinking "Just a Pup" can start on saturday |

Well, the Rubytoo with her newer P55 that does not overheat and that starts pretty much first kick will be at Davistown again, ready for any challenge thrown at her. She will even run with a standard prop and all normal gear aboard, including her overweight crew. Matt and Ron. |

Saying that there is a Regatta over to Tom's is just like saying we're having one over to Davistown. Some of us don't know where either of these places are. You may wish to mention the state so that people who do not know can make a judgment of distances required, etc. Archibald ( not in the know ) . |

Sorry John as I only posted this as a "heads up" I did not include all details. This will be our 11th regatta, last year we had over 100 vessels register, from putters to Gentlemans lauches Davistown is on the Central Coast of Nsw,approx 85 kms north of Sydeney(1hr) Currently the format is >Saturday people from further away ,ie Qld,Vic,SA,Sydney,Toronto etc arrive and we have a cruise around Brisbane waters in our boats followed by a Barbeque and Get together, some years we have a Caberet at the local RSL.On Sunday we have the public day with stalls, bands,SES,Fire Brigade,St Johns ambos,Seascouts etc having displays and fundraising There is judging of the boats in a number of catergories,Best gentlemans launce up to 25ft, Best restored putter>no fiberglass Most original putter Best restored putter>fiberglass over timber Best putter less than 10 yrs old Best dressed crew >Period costume Best novelty boat We have a grand parade and tour around the waters past other places on Brisbane waters so people can see the boats Their is a Putt putt challenge for those of us who rate our chances that our boat is quickest We have prize giving at the end of the day for all these,as well as a perpetual trophy awarded to the boat most deserving comendation(not necessarily the best ,flashest boat, the crews attitude and effort are also part of it) As I said earlier its early days yet, things to be fine tuned etc Thanks ,Todd |

Hi Todd, Over the last 11 years I have seen the event change quite significantly. In particular the last couple of years appears to me to have seen an explosion of stalls selling the usual Sunday Market type stuff. Old engine, machinery and marine displays seem to have fallen off at the same time. Because it is a community and fund raising event this is understandable as the organisers obviously wish to maximise the fund raising return whilst appealing to the general public. I think that your comments re a 2 day event make sense. Sunday for the fund raising effort with Saturday perhaps more geared towards the boats and engines. 2 Days also makes a little more sense for people whom travel long distances to attend, I have heard comments along the lines of "it is a bit expensive to attend for the Sunday only". Wood Chop comps etc, I think sound good. Perhaps underpin the Regatta with an historical or Brisbane Water heritage theme? Cheers Mark S. |

Todd, i am with you on making the event a true two day event, more maritime and engine displays are a must , the swap meet and like would suit me as the Rubytoo runs a P55. Perhaps boat numbers should match numbers on shore which would allow storage of some gear ashore as you are assured of returning to the same berth after runs. This is by far the best run and attended regatta i have attended. the banter and easy going feeling is relaxing and the welcoming by locals is great. Matt and Ron [RUBYTOO Sydney] |

Todd, Can you make the Putt Putt Challange a single and twin event? Start at the same time but make the singles fly one flag and the twins another. Would make for a fairer race........ PS My single 3.5 blaxland has a great back fire happening. She is completly rebuilt as per the book with new gasgets etc. Any hints? Wally (nic name) |

This year we are handicaping all entrants so hopefully we all arrive at the finish more or less at the same time.To do this we will have time trials on the saturday before, and for those that cant make that we will assign a handicap based on waterline length, engine type and power, beam etc Their will also be classes for diesel and steam(Kettle class)I think that I am about to be lumbered with a 750m handicap, Re your single does it run at all? If not, check that the piston is in the right way ie port in piston facing away from inlet/exhaust ports. Untill the sump aquires the right amount of fuel you will also get quite a lot of popping and farting etc but should settle down after 5>10 mins Failing that its either a lean carb or a magneto fault/timing issue, all easy to fix |

Hey Todd, Piston is in right way and it does run. (gets cats running and dogs barking) When setting the timing I assume the knob on the spindle lines up with the hole on the magneto casing (TDC). Is it possible for the thing to run if it is one gog either side? Sounds like the scrutineers will be busy this year measuring water lines. I still think single and twin flagging is the way to go.. I saw some of the props last year that some guys had on. I'm sure they wern't standard in 1920-1930....well maybe on a spitfire they were! |

It sounds like your magneto drive is right re hole and peg Yes they will run but badly The points should be 0.012',plug 0.020>0.025 The points should open at 5/16'btdc(small ruler down plug hole) or 2 3/16 btdc on flywheel Is their any evidence of tracking on the maggy cap? Is it a Lucas SR type with a metal cap? If so replace the cap with a new plastic one Also, for a small fee we can make you a prop The problem with going singles vs twin is you will have 7hp simplexs,6hp claes,7>9 hp Vires etc against 2 1/2 Blaxland and Halls and I know of one very quick Clae in a 16ft10'boat And a very slow 2 1/2 in a 13ft boat Then we can start throwing things like vincos |

PPS I know this sounds silly but do you have a known tested plug. Some of the Champion 25s are duds straight out of the box(Iwent through 6 in one batch) Now we use a N21 with an adaptor>much more reliable and a 10th the price. If you can find a plug made in USA rather than Mexico you will stand a better chance re reliabilty |

The plugs are new (Mexicans I think) and you could weld with the spark. It's a nice blue core with an orange outer on the spark, hurts like hell. I am running an N21 plug and adapter which I picked up by reading the discussion board. The gap is right but I will check the timing when I get home on the week end. Cheer and beers Wally PS I’ve heard of this fast CLAE in Davistown. Whose is it? And how fast is it? adapter |

I grew up on the Nepean River and my dad had a clae. It was the best motor and can remember him teaching me how to start it. It was so easy when you knew how and went like a clock. I would love to have it or one like it now. Are there any others around Davo? I thought you would get better than 7.5 out of it. Suppose water line etc plays a part. They are such a great sounding thing. Maybe you need a bigger bigger prop!!! What do they rev at? Oh bye the way I set all the timing in my single today and she has settled down and stopped back firing. I need to run her under load. Should I adjust the mixture in as far as she lets me or what is a good setting to aim for. What sort of revs can I get her to run comfortably? She is no speed boat but a graceful old lady. How much for a big prop?? (Thanks you have me thinking, but the prop won’t turn if I ain’t got the oomph) When do the registrations come out for the Davo regatta? This will hopefully be my first year with a boat. I will tow her up for the week end and get some more photos and info. I have another boat with a twin Blaxy but I will have to spend more time and money on her. It's hard when you work interstate and lucky to be home every second weekend. Wally…….. |

Petes boat is a big lump of a thing and yes we are still working on props for it Pete has a spare motor which is complete but we are yet to fully resore it There is another guy on the same wharf with one also. I have a couple in bits yet to be done Set your carby up on the water under load at medium revs, adjust the mixture screw using very small movements a 1/16 turn to be considered a medium movement.adjust mixture screw out until the engine starts to four stroke then adjust in until it stops four stroking and runs smoothly You will have to wait a little between adjustments as the fuel blend in the sump takes a few moments to alter. This settup may be a trifel rich so you may want to lean it down a bit if your exhaust is still a bit smokey after a few minutes of running What you want to acheive is a happy medium where you dont foul plugs(especialy at idle),not to lean that you cause engine damage When you think you are happy with it go for a 15>20 min run, then throttle down and cut the motor before it idles to long, remove the plug and check for a mid brown coloring on the porcelin. Black and sooty too rich White too lean. Sorting out the entry forms as we speak, should be out in the next 2-3 weeks At the factory today reco'ing a couple of dynos and some Wico maggies for simplexes,at least you can do this on shitty rainy sundays,as there is bugger all on the box reguarding motor racing these day since Chanel 7 took over V8 supercars Best of luck Todd |

Thanks Todd, What is a prop worth? I have a 13x9, 7x9, 11x10 & 11x9 on the boat at the moment. Which one will keep me up with you blokes (or at least in sight) for the regatta? Wally PS where can I get a plastic cover for the Lucas maggy? It ain't tracking but now that you have mentioned it I'm sure I will need one soon. Is the other clae cooetoo? My dad worked for CLAE at Balmain and I spoke to him and my Dads initials and engine no: were on his engine. They used to stamp the initials of the builder and the number engine that he had built. Can't remember his name but I have his details some where. Lives in Davo. I took the old man up and he took him out in the boat and put on a BBQ. He has 3 or 4 CLAES and plenty of gearboxs and the old man felt like he was back in 1930. Great day! He smashed us with home brew, I'm sure you would have sampled it. |

Bring all your props we will be able to sort one out of the lot of them even if we have to "bash it around a little. Failing that Boyd will probably have something hang off the rafters and do you a trade. In fact any body reading this, and who is thinking about coming to the "Davo"regatta, bring some swap meet stuff because even if I dont get it officially organised we will have a swap meet either at Boyds or the club house(Putt putt central)on the sat/sun .But let me know first so I can organise storage etc Boyds done a top job making the trophies for the two new classes :1 Kettle class, best steam boat 2:Knocketa knocketa, best diesel powered timber boat. Its official! 1 There will be a saturday cruise/putt starting at approx 13;00hrs 2 We envisage 4 different destinations a)Water fall bay (height restriction 2.5 mtrs awl) b)Half tide rocks(power restriction ,tide runs at 4>5 knots >small singles and slow boats not advised) c) The Orphanage run >no restriction d) Gosford/Saratoga run> no restriction 2 Time trials for the "Challenge" 11;00>12:30 3 At the finish of the Cruise/putt there will be hot food,tea/coffee and a band Cost $5>$8 p/h BYO Wine, beer,Chateau Rothchild 39 etc Please let me know intentions asap so we get it right |

Great news, hope the beer is the real thing (Tooheys New, $56 a slab up here). Little Blaxland is running well but loosing sump oil from rear bearing. She has new gaskets and not leaking anywhere except for the bearings. Should I just tighten them up a tad? Or is my oil to thin? What oil should I put in the sump? Todd, do you have Jim Rankin's phone no? He offered to crash at his place any time so might take his offer for the regatta as he has plenty of space, he drinks "New" too! Can't find his details anywhere; think the Mrs through it out!! Wally |

It may need reshiming, dont overtighten the base plate bolts as you may generate other problems Check that they are not loose ,if you tighten them up do it in small steps and check ease of crank rotation. You have my ph number ? |

Hey Todd, Well here it is the night before the Dave Regatta, and where am I? In Darwin, repacking my suitcase, about to head off to the States again for another course. I started the single yesterday and to my surprise it started second bounce. She won’t rev out and it is running backwards better than it runs forwards!!!! With a bit of backfire tooooo. Is ther a trick to the timing to run it forwards? It has a locating pin in the maggie and the pin in the maggie mount is on the mark at TDC. Bloody boats…. Caught a few good muddies at least…… I’m sure your pissed or working on it at this very moment, so have a Tooheys (NEW) for me and I will be back on the east coast by Christmas. Have a great day tomorrow mate. I will be checking the Davo.com for photos so make sure you get plenty. Spoke to Jim today, he said your boat is sounding great and cuts a mean bow wave. He had to rebuild his in-laws motor in the boat after a rod seized. Sorry to hear his boat ain’t running for a week or so. Send some photos to [email protected] so I can drool. Have a beer for me… Wally |

Sorry mate only got round to doing this now. What with all the froth and bubbles putting things together, time just slipped away Yes there is a trick to it,the points should just be starting to open at 5/16 btdc(ruler down plug hole)Finally got to park my tired arse at about 3pm sunday arvo, then had about a thousand beers, thought it a good idea at the time but it made monday awfully long and slow Yeah Jims had some rotten luck with that donk but I dare say he will persevere and get there in the end.It was nice of him to donate two bottles of plonk to our fund raiser trivia nite Have lost his number and as he has a silent # it hard to track him down,But if I pulled my finger out I could probably drive the 500 or so meters to his place Any way thanks Jim. Cheers and beers Wally Todd |
