Is anyone familiar with this name brand or does anyone have any info. I have an outboard eng which is a (2) cylinder with a propeller shaft which goes straight out the rear. It looks like there was originally a nameplate on the top of the gas tank, which is missing. The supporting castings are aluminum , and one of them has the words "Detroit" & "Caille" in separate places. Each casting appears to have it's own individual part number. This engine had belonged to my father and I'd like to restore it. |

There was no name plate on gas tank. there should be two screw holes for a small u-shaped carrying handle-it is aluminum. Caille used transfer decals for all I.D. and starting information. No one has ever figured out what the part and model #'s mean. I have collected Cailles for 20 yrs. |

Frank, You would have to describe the engine further and possibly post a picture of it. We generally try not to appraise engines here... Caille made inboard engines as well as outboard motors. Either one is worth "something". Condition is the critical factor. You can look on our classifieds and elsewhere to see what older engines sell for. |

RE: Caille Just for general info, the Caille ( pronounced "KA" )was founded by two brothers. They were into a number of things: They developed an automobile c.1908 called the "Caille-Dubrie." It had an air cooled 4 cylinder engine. Only one prototype was made. Before that, they had invented the slot machine, and made many different models up to the 30's. The original machines were placed in Detroit's taverns. They were definetely against the law and police often raided taverns and removed the slot machines. The basic problem was they were very tall and heavy, and could not be moved in time before the police got there. Soon, table-top machines were developed in Chicago and elswhere. Thus, Chicago became the slot machine leader. Around 1902, they built Detroit's first movie theatre, called the "Casino." Well, I'm running out of breath, so keep your motor runnin'! |

I have a CAILLE single outboard motor in my garage for 44 years and do not know what year it is. It has a number under the tank--14-50. there seems to be a casting line between the 4 and the 5. It is missing a spark plug, ignition wire cut, and a broken mount under the tank--othewise everything seems to be in good shape, shifts ok, (5 positions), flywheel turns freely, choke and spark advance moves. Does anyone know anything about this motor ? and is there any interest in this engine. I am uploading A picture, It comes out ok If not e-mail me and I will send additional pictures |

I've got an old liberty twin in the garage, collecting dust. Unfortunately, I am short one magneto.... maybe someone knows... I think they used a bosch magneto... but where the heck would I find one for it? As well, it's missing the gas tank. Other than that, it's in impeccable condition. Any tips? |

I am looking to restore a single cylinder Caille lIberty that my deceased father-in-law had stashed away in a pole barn. It last ran in the 1990's. Magneto is included. I'd like to know what year it was made. Serial # is 45503. The flywheel has 1077 and the letter G on it. I'd like to know what size of spark plug it used. I am looking for decals for the fuel tank. Can anyone help me? Thanks. |

I am still hoping to find someone to assist me with my research. I am looking for some basic info. on a Caille Liberty Drive single cylinder #44503 that I am restoring. My deceased father-in-law, whom I greatly admired, had it last running in the 1990's. I want to bring this back to life to original conditions. This has become a very sentimental project for me. I have viewed Jack Craib's website many times this winter and still have many questions. Can anyone help? Questions: year made, spark plug size/gap, original fuel tank color/lettering and source for decals, source for gas tank shutoff valve, questions about electrical system connections, and is there a good set of close-up pictures for this model to assist with the restoration proecess. Hope to hear from someone soon. Thanks again! |

Luke, I have an older Antique outboard club(AOMCI.org) member directory that lists the Caille special interest group contact as LOU DANLEY at HCR 67,Box558,Roach Mo.,65787 Phone 573-346-6296 If still a valid number; he might know someone in your locale who can give you a hand. I believe there's a company in Maryland that makes all sorts of old outboard motor decals and carry vintage parts-someone here might know who they are.The Liberty Caille motors are not uncommon in Outboard collector clubs. MI. has a very active antique outboard(AOMCI) chapter. Contact Lee Holland in Algonac at 810-794-2819 for chapter info. |
