Hello Unfortunately I have had no replies to my question on engine parts for my very old Yanmar NTS 85. I do hope that someone will be able to answer this question for me. I would be very grateful. The old manual states that I should be using SAE 20 but I am unable to find this anywhere. What should I use instead? The engine is at least 50 years old, single cylinder and water cooled. I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance. Maarten Hooykaas Auckland, New Zealand |

Sorry I forgot to mention. It is a diesel engine. |

Hello Marten Hooykaas I am surprised that in an agricultural area like New Zealand you can't find a specialist monograde SAE 20, but you probably know that SAE means American Society of Automotive Engineers, thought you'd found the right place? Wrong! Steve McQueen said in the film "Sand Pebbles" Monkey see monkey do, that is SAE rating, there are oilmen who deal in Centistokes or Saybolt Universal Seconds and you need to know starting and maximum temperature, not that gear tolerance should be a problem, as an experimental run try a multigrade 20W/30, or 20w/40 - whatever you can get. But if you want to rebuild engines you are going to have to learn to do a whole load better than ask questions like that one. |

Well, I guess I'm probably a day short and a dollar late or something like that. In some of my digging, I ran across this site with a nice explaination and chart for many things concerning fluidics. Hope you can find some helpful stuff here. George Coates http://pump.net/liquiddata/approxviscconv.htm |

I have a manual for the NTS85 and it states the oil should be SAE 30 ( Recommended to use) and SAE 20 in winter. The manual was printed in Japan. Does anyone know have to put an electicic start on the thing. Regards Noel |

I have just got hold of an NTS85 from 1962, I have seen one with an electric dyna start on it, it was purely bolted to the side of the engine via a fabricated frame and drove the engine via a belt to the pulley on the front of the flywheel. De-compress the cylinder, push the button, let her wind up to speed slowly, let go the compresion and kawoomf! Off we go! DOes anyone out there have any info at all on this engine, anything!! It seems to be imposible to find anything on it! |

I'm not sure if it is the same or similiar but a friend has a small yanmar one-lunger with the belt driven dyna start, it also has geared hand crank which I had to use one rather cold morning ,what a bitch.... Wd-40 did the trick! (What engineer needs, WD-40 and a roll of duct tape!!) |

I just got a hold of an old sailboat that I'm restoring. It has a 1964 Yanmar NTS 85 and I finally got it started today. I've got the original instruction book luckily, although no good for complete rebuilding. It does have a belt driven starter, so no hand crank for me thank you very much. The only website I've seen that carries a few engine parts is >>http://www.woodenboatshop.com.au/site/misc/wbs/downloads/yanmar/quickref/QR%2020 07.pdf I'm hoping to find a mechanics manual for this and more parts, I'm thinking I'll have to learn Japanese to trace this one down. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll even scan the instruction book if you like, and post pictures showing how the electric starter is set up with wiring diagram. Maybe you could help me out with the repair manual or cross compatible engine/transmission parts? |

Thanks Ernie, I checked that site, mostly late model Yanmar. I'm going to post this in a new thread seeing that it is a bit off topic, not much to do with the oil. |
