Hello, anyone restore one of these single cylinder marine engines before? I just purchased it and plan to fix her up nice. |

This would be a first year production engine by "Hicks" franklin, a great one to restore. Since these engines were the backbone of the West Coast Fishing fleets in the early 1900's, my fist concern would be to determin the condition of the cooling system ( all water jackets) regardless of the intended use after restoration. Most of these engines used salt water cooling and suffer from the effects. Even if used for static display you could see your efforts crumble before your eyes from the inside-out if you ignor this step. Andrew has a series on controling rust and salt corrosion by Mark Stretch and should be helpful. Good luck and hope you have a suitable chain hoist, those castings are HEAVY! |

I don't know if you have worked on old inboards or not before.... but a good place to start is Dick Day's reprint of the Palmer Gas Engine Handbook and Stan Grayon's Old Marine Engines.
