Great photo Richard. Its the Model R of 1908/09. Note the camshaft bearings have demountable caps. Early version of this engine were line bored with each cam secured with a set screw. Note the camshaft drive gears are at the aft end of the closed crankcase with the water pump at the flywheel end. Note the absence of drip oilers. I am curious why they were still advertising this model when it had been superceded by the NR (New R) in Dec 1912. Guess they still had them left over in the plant and were offering them at a reduced price. Note the exsposed reverse gear which was enclosed in an oil bath in the NR and NL series. |

* It is a great looking engine, When i saw this ad it caught my attention that it was older technology than 1914 - open cams and gears -- keep the oil can handy ! Just scanning MotorBoat magazines - The R engine like above post ad was periodically in 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913 and the above 1914. This ad ran all 12 months of 1909 ! * |
