Hello, Can anybody point me in the right direction? I have a small 3cyl. (30" high) diesel that I need some info on. Have not found a spec. plate yet so I can't give a model #. This motor has no exposed pushrods, it does have an electric starter. I would like to know the size (cu in) and HP rating, rpm and what the oil pressure should be. Also parts sources if any, operators manual availability, etc. etc. etc. Thanks Tim |

BoatBum, Thanks for the reply, but I would have to say you are correct for the larger motors. But this is a small high speed motor, so maybe it is aftermarket?? It has "Atlas Imperial" Cast in the Block so it is an Atlas motor, no question. Any pointers or contact information you could share? Thanks Tim |

Hi Tim, Your Atlas could be after market, the company went out of business in the late 50's. They did make some small diesels and some experimental engines for the government. Maybe you could post some pictures and dimentions of the engine. Also try contacting Andrian Lipp at: www.oldtacomamarine.com He is very knowledgeable on Atlas Marine engines and may be of help. Thanks again, for the reply. I have pictures coming and when I have them I will post them here. The engine stands about 30' tall, Has 3 cylinders, and also has another name cast in the head that has been chiseled off that starts with an "L". Tim |

Hello Tim, The name is “LANOVA”. It’s an Italian name and refers to a patented type of combustion chamber. Atlas and Lanova collaborated from about 1930 unitl the end in 1945. I had my Dad read all the numbers on the block and head and this is what I have so far. Cast in block 2103-R Cast in Head T2207R and C55 Stamped in the block at the front 102581 I hope one of those is a model #. But from what I have found so far they are not Thanks for the Link George, I've already been over there snooping around. I hope to have pics soon. The first ones were to small to see. Well here are some pics, they are on the small side, but it is the best I can do for now. They are from a 2 mega pixel phone camera and I do not know how to enlarge them without making them blurry. Tim

Dodgeit, You can use any photo editing program on your PC to reduce the file size to under 100k, or you can use this online tool to reduce the pixel size. http://www.oldmarineengine.com/resize/resize.html |

Tim, I find your engine pictured in "Diesel Engine Catalog" volume 10 of 1945 alongside the Atlas-Imperial lineup as Atlas-Lanova.Shown in 3 forms as 1,2, and 3 cyl.all with a bore of 3 1/8" and stroke of 3 3/4" for a displacement of 28.7 cu. in. per cyl.Hp listed as 5,10,and 15 @1800 RPM and a compression ratio of 15:1.They say this is the answer to a long time demand for a low powered high speed diesel engine for small industrial applications and electrical generation.Engines are pictured fitted to hoists,pumps,gen sets, and compressors.Lanova Corporation advertises in this same their "Lanova-Diesel" combustion system out of Long Island City, N.Y. and lists their licensees:Atlas Imperial, Buda, Chrysler, Continental, Electric Boat, Kohler, Mack, and U.S.Navy.Their system offered an answer to some of the problems encountered by the early Diesel "Engineers". |

If anyone is interested the Lanova head features a horizontial injector that shoots a spray of diesel across the top of the piston into an energycell on the oppisite side of the cylinder. The fuel enters the cell swerls around and ignites. Injectin timeing is generally 26 degrees ahead of tdc so there is time for all this to happen. When guys find an injector stuck in the head they get the bright idea to remove the energycell and drive the injector out with a punch. This swells the tip makeing removeal of the injector impossible. |
