| Twin Graymarine engine decoding HELP |

My neighbor has 2 Graymarine straight six flathead engines complete with all running gear. He would like me to research this equipment and offer all for sale. I have been able to do much research on the running gear but am stumped as to decoding the engine numbers so as to know what we have. Any help will be appreciated. I have inspected the engines and find the following numbers cast into the block, heads and manifolds.
Heads, serial #s are obliterated, 82355 on both heads
Portside engine left side of block CL 8600A505,
Exhaust manifold port 62158, pat#27088, F or S 20T, 59590 SCC
Exhaust manifold strbd 43058, pat#27088, F or S 20T, 59590 SCC
The following is the list of running gear;
Paragon reduction gears Mod# RC25, Serial#5A1335
Twin Zenith carbs
Thru hull stuffing boxes
Shafts 13’ x 1 3/8”
Struts 12”
Props D22 P26 L & R
Brass rudders and steering boxes 19 ½” x 10 ½”
Twin copper exhaust 3 ½” OD 12” 45 degree L, 5’ tube and 8’ tube

The cl 8600a505 is contintial number, i don't have a list of all those numbers. 600a is seen on 6 cylinder engines. The gray marine model is i think normally seen on the gearbox. |

thanks Larry. I did some google searching for continental engines, but couldn't find much on them except they were used in Checker Taxis in the late '50s, but can't find any number decoding reference information on them. I shall look again for any other numbers that might be Gray #s. |

Jed,
Just a thought. If the Zenith Carbs are original they will have a dime sized tag on the top of the float bowl with part numbers on them. Post that and I can check the Zenith manual to see application. |

I took a look at the engines again and found the number 55720 which is cast into the top of the bell shaped housing that the paragon reverse gear bolts to. Larry had indicated the Gray numbers may be found on the gear box of the engine. I am unfamiliar as to what the gear box is or its location as the engines do both have Paragon gear boxes on them. Each Paragon consists of a reverse gear and a reduction gear. The paragon reverse gear is mod# AJ1C25 with a ser# of 5A1384. The reduction gear box is mod# RC25 and ser# 5a1335. I also found the nickel sized aluminum tab riveted to the zenith carb and it has the number of 11792 which perhaps may aid in cross referencing the carbs to the correct Graymarine engine model.

Folks, found out today from a member replying directly to me that these Gray engines are 1955-later, 427 cid, 200 HP. So now I can put together a posting to the ad classifieds and offer all of this gear for sale. Thanks all for your help. |

In my 1958 book the T427 is listed as 140hp @ 2400 rpm. This is a contintial industrial engine listing. |
