I am considering buying a 1919 wooden ex-river ferry. It has a 6 cylinder fresh-water cooled Ford desel engine which was reported to have been installed in 1986 but I believe was a spare engine at that time and so may be older. I think it is 80 HP. First detailed inspection tomorrow but very grateful or any feedback/comments on such an engine. I note Ford is not one of the manufacturers listed. Is that because they have never made marine diesels and this is an ex-truck desel or only that they USED to make marine diesels but not any more???

Dagenham? maybe
Ford used these in pickups etc for quite a few years before they used the Navistar (IHC) V8s

Malcom,

The home page explains what year engines are covered on this website. This site list some of the more popular pre 1940 inboard marine engines. There are thousands of different companies that manufactured early inboard marine engines. yours is probably a lot later model then 1940 but I'm sure if anyone could help you they will.

Your engine may be a Lehman Ford conversion. I believe they used to be in New Jersey. You can learn more by Googling "Lehman Marine Engines". Here is a site for Lehman manuals: http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/fordlehman/

Good Luck, Ted

Thanks everyone for your help. I hadn't realised the site was only for pre-1940 engines and so apologise for taking up post space. Howver, FYI the engine type is a 2722E which was not sold as a marine engine but just a stationary industrial diesel and I think is a Leyman Ford.
