I'm thinking about buying a Sea Mule pusher tug, WWII vintage. It has two Chrystler straight 8 gas engines with double Carter carbs. The engine model is R M8 (these numbers came off the boat, I'm hoping I've got the correct nomenclature here).
Anyways, there's two of them. I'd probably pull them and re-power with diesel. Are they worth anything to anybody? If I would keep them, is it possible to get parts for them still?

Hi Martin,
The engines are in demand by some people probably more as a source of parts.
I do have the manuals for the engines too.

Martin,
The M8 was a very popular Engine. They made over 20,000 of them. Internal engine parts are readily available in the antique car market. Reverse gear parts are much harder. Lots cheaper than a Gray or Hercules 6 to do. They are more desirable with a 1-1 gear. Seems the Canadians love them. |

Martin, If you purchase the tug with the chrysler M8's and are interested in selling the engines, I'd be interested in buying them as drop in spares after I rebuild them for my boat, which the US Navy repowered using the M8's in 1942

Hello All,
SOrry about the delay in responding here to your queries...I've been both gone and busy.
I'm still in the negotiating stage in regards to the Sea Mule. Once I do get it, I'm not sure if I'; keepthe Chrystlers in it, or repower (Would like to put some Detroit diesels in it, say 371's) but, we'll see.

New to the group
We who had the old Chrysler streight 8 and watched it purr, idle slower than anything, just loves it,,was in my old 45 ft1934 Elco, sat in yard since 62, can turn it with a bar on flywheel,no starter, has a rusty gen, manifolds ,other parts,somewhere a carb,dont want to scrap it , if anyone wants it for parts or rebuild , welcome , i can load you, 718 448 5356 Happy New Year Capt Ed |

I have a 1953 Chrysler M-48 straight eight in need of an intake manifold and an exaust elbow casting # 4028-H. Anyone know of a source for these parts? |

Captain Ed,
What would it cost me for you to crate and ship COD the manifolds from this engine. I haven't been successful in obtaining these parts as yet. I assume the exaust elbow is not available.

It's not something that is currently available. Skip Lewis makes the gears 216 531-9919. You have to make the gaskets. Order the bushings and bearings by size. |

The old Chrysler 8 has been given to a restorer of old vessels, I am pleased to see someone put new life back into something with it, was one day from the scrap heap, so its gone but not forgotten.

Sorry I did not see your response, I was able to get another water pump for my engine.
I do however have a question about the oil capacity of a marine 8 engine. I don't trust my dipstick as it reads add oil when I have 2 1/5 quarts in the oil filter and 11 quarts in the pan.
I just think that that's way too much oil. Any thoughts? |
