I recently bought an Islander 32' that has an A-4 that was rebuilt before the previous owner parked the boat 8 years ago.It has sat and I have partially dis-assembled the engine to inspect and rebuild what's needed. My question is how do I soak and free up the pistons as they are stuck probably in place from rings being gummed up to cylinder walls ? Yje engine is in great shape otherwise and was well maintained before. How do I free up the pistond without doing any damage ? |

first question? Is there rust in the cylinders?
If not and the engine is seized, You may have water in the bottom end, Have you drained the oil and looked at it?

the cylinders are very clean. I'll drain the oil and look but on the dipstick looked clean. I was assuming from it sitting so long that they would gum up or rust a little. i also have not checked yet to be sure it is out of gear. |

Ok, The starter could be jambed, The gear box could be jambed, if the cylinders are clean, try and rock the flywheel back and forth, I bet it comes loose, Out of gear is important |

do you think it would be common for the pistons to freeze or the gearbox ? i put it in neutral but did not rotate the prop to see if it is. pulled the starter out and the flywheel cover off but what would be the best way to rotate the flywheel |

I did more investigating, have the exhaust manifold off and the plate that covers the valve springs/guires ect. it all is in good shape, I am beginning to believe the problem is in the gear box. maybe the thrust bearing or something. it goes in and out of gear ok and when it's in neutral I can spin the shaft. any ideas how to pinpoint the cause ? |
