Hi, I have just gotten a boat with an MD1 in it. It has been sitting for a few years. Can anyone give me some advice on the things that absolutely need to be checked before I hit the starter button to see what happens? I have one manual for it, but it is more to the tune of how to fix things, not how to make sure it is ok to turn it over. Thanks, Jack Harrill

Jack,
Got plenty of MD1's in operation after prolonged periods of unuse. Some good & some bad! Best thing is to drop me an email and leave us know what things look like- face value at present or any past history the engine may have. Could pass on some time saving tips & frustration free efforts there.

Regards - Pat.

We have a Volvo Penta 2001 (MD1?) that hasn't been started for about a year. Does anyone have any good tips for cold-starting this engine?

Torque settings MD1
Tightening torque for the four big cilinderhead nuts is 108 Nm (11 kgm / 80 lb.ft.) and for the two small nuts is 44 Nm (4.5 kgm /33 lb.ft ). The tightening sequence is important. Start with a big nut in the middle then the one diagonally opposite the first one at the corner, next the other big nut in the middle and further the last big nut at the corner, then the small nut diagonally opposite the last big nut and at last the other small nut.

To start a cold engine after a long period of rest you should check the fuel system (valves, filters, venting), clean air filters, check the oil lubricating level, check the waterinlet and drainplugs, check V-belt tension and batterypower. Move the speed control to half throttle and press the cold starting device. Then start the engine with the startermotor or dynastart. For hand starting (a heavy job), first crank the engine a few revolutions with the decompression lever in vertical position before pressing the lever down to start the engine.

I am looking for anyone with wiring diagrams or photos of a wired Volvo Md1 with a dynostart dynamo. I bought a 1966 Cheoy Lee Cadet with a motor that appears to be in great shape service records from the early 90's sadly some one stripped all the electrical from the entire boat as some sort of refit fantasy. Now I am stuck as to what to do with the dynamo.

Find a manual with diagrams at:

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marine_leisure_engines/engines/out_ of_production_engines/

I know there is a diagram of MD1B and I guess it's allmost the same wiring diagram as for the MD1
