Hello, does anyone have detailed parts list or manual for the 3HP Lathrop engine. I'm not able to find a serial or model#, where would I look? My main concern is to obtain an illustrated view of the dismantling of the flywheel and crank. I believe the babbetting may be bad in the crank area, for when you turn the flywheel by hand, at BDC, there's a clunk. Bob McLeod from New Brunswick, Canada. |

Don't know what model you have. Lathrop made a practice of stamping the serial number on the top of the cylinder under the head gasket. He also stamped the serial number on the crankshaft bell housing where you can see it if it isn't covered in too many coats of paint. These locations were in addition to the Cast brass tag on the forward face of the cylinder. These are often missing due to sticky fingers. The serial number of the bell housing is supposed to be the same as the cylinder as J. W. Lathrop for many years wouldn't use jigs and fixtures to make parts interchangeable. You may find the front bell housing cap screw holes are not in the same position as the aft bell housing. Good luck. |

Bob, Just happened to see your request. I have 3 Lathrup catalogues and they all say the flywheel is held on to the tapered end of the crank with a large nut which is to be removed by placing 2 steel pieces into holes in nut and using a 3rd piece of steel (while holding flywheel from moving) between the first 2 to loosen the nut. Line up the holes in the nut with holes in flywheel and screw in 2 cap screws alternately tightening one at a time until wheel breaks loose. If this is anything like my RW1 Palmer, the nut is a left hand thread. The nut to be tightened in the reverse manner. |

I restored a 3 hp Lathrop a while back. I don't remember the Flywheel nut as left handed. Also be carefull with it as it is cast iron not steel like the Palmer version. Also the Lathrop has very course thread, unlike the Palmer which has very fine thread. Hope this helps Ernie |

I would like to know where to get a copy, either photocopied or original of catologue no.25 or the specifications for the 3 HP One-Cylinder Lathrop Engine featured on the first webpage of OLD MARINE ENGINE. Am willing to pay for photocopies. Bob from New Brunswick, Canada. |

The following comments came to me by email from Bob123. He is having trouble with his ISP and does not seem to be able to recieve email.
Quote:Hello Andrew, From Paul I received a copy of the Lathrop T-36 catalogue, parts and price list. Would the parts and drawings from this catalogue coincide with the engine that I have, serial # 14316''? What would I need for the firing mechanism besides the coil that came with it? The reason I ask is that when I received it, I wondered if there was a part or two missing - I'm in the dark about the firing mechanism and carburation aspect. Have a very Merry Christmas. sincerely Bob McLeod
Bob, Do you have a copy of the PALMER GAS ENGINE HANDBOOK? It contains basic wiring diagrams for a variety of styles of these early engines, it also contains fuel system info. |
