What years were the Palmer P60 made? How many engines were produced over those years? How many are still in use? |

The P-60 is a marine adaptation of an Internation Harvester C60 tractor engine by Palmer. This happened in the late 1940s. As far as I can tell the last ones were built into at least 1974. The question of how many were left came up before about a year ago. I made a guess that there might be about 200 running or being held on to. Richard Day thought that sounded like a ball park figure. |

Production started in 1955 and probably ended about 1975 with Crusader. Thermo Electron bought the design in 1971 for their Crusader line. The people that bought the residue of the P-60 did not actually make engines as I understand it they sold parts and left over engines from Crusader. No one knows haw many are still around. Eddie is probably in the ball park but they are rapidly disapearing as operateing engines. I know of one that has been operating in saltwater for nearly 30 years with no rust out as the owner is careful to always flush the salt out with fresh water after every use. I believe that 200-300K IHC Cub-Lo-Boys were made and a lot of them are still in good operating condition. |

Richard, thanks for the clarification on the start date. I must have been thinking of the IH tractor version as of the late 1940s. |

On my 1970 P60, the housing is the "early model" sold by moyermarine.com. It is their part number CSTH_04_173 and sells for $105. They also sell the thermostat. |

Bought a 1970 Columbia 34 MKII with a blown Palmer P-60 gas engine. Any suggestions as to a relatively easy replacement? I'd like to go Yanmar. |

There is no direct replacement for the P-60. Yanmar is a good one but look into Kubota ifyou are looking at bang for the buck. Strip off some of the rare parts, especially the exaust manifold. |

I have a Palmer P60 on my 30" Columbia sailboat with a burnt valve. Can the valves be replaced without pulling the engine? Through the exhaust manifold? Any sources for valves? Any advice would be appreciated. |

You can check with Valu-Bilt or Steiner Tractor through internet or Napa Auto Parts. Refer to International Harvester, Cub (NOT THE CUB CADET) or Loboy tractor with C60 engine. New cylinder heads are available from after market tractor sources if you need to pull the head. |

Speaking of heads ... do NOT use a steel head gasket meant for a tractor. It won't stand up to raw water cooling. www.gasketstogo.com has a salt water version. He's in the far east, but I've ordered from him and had no problem. |

Hi there, I'm pulling out my P-60 from my Columbia MKII - Walter V Drive, the whole assembly and am repowering with a Yanmar 30 HP Diesel Saildrive. Is there anyone who would like my weary 'betty' for parts? I'm currently hauled - new engine is going in second week of May. Located at Pier 35 C&C in Toronto, Canada - would love to hoist it out and onto your trailer and know she's going to a good home. Crane avail at short notice too. Engine still functions at minimal power - under any load, dies - 3 cylinders not delivering hot / minimal compression. Had an impact with a submerged container last summer that threw the whole input shaft / prop shaft / transmission / system out of alignment, thought it was fine, and wasn't, replaced the input shaft bearing already, progressively degenerated worse and worse. Has been diagnosed to have more broken parts inside as a result of the impact. Needs a lot of attention - I need reliability and power. Alternator perfect, impeller new, new key, new spark plugs (with a box of extras, pump, other spare parts too come with. Would hate to see her go to waste (all that fine metal) and if you're an enthusiast and have connections, you can use the parts if anything, or share them with other palmer wonder friends. Email me at [email protected] if you want her...and we can coordinate pickup...the deal is you take the whole thing...thanks! and pass this along to anyone you know who may be interested. Pictures available... |
