I have not been able to obtain any information on the Sterling GRS which originally powered my 1922 Ditchburn. I should also like to locate an engine. This was a 6 cylinder engine and was built in Buffalo, N.Y. |

HI JOHN,
THE STERLING GR SERIES WAS INTRODUCED IN 1918 AND BY 1922 WAS KNOWN AS THE DOLPHIN. THEY WERE BUILT IN 4,6 AND 8 CYLINDER LOW MEDIUM AND HI SPEED VERSIONS. THEY HAD 4 OVERHEAD VALVES PER CYLINDER, COUNTER WEIGHTED CRANKSHAFT ETC. A DIFFICULT ENGINE TO LOCATE IN MARINE FORM. INDUSTRIAL VERSIONS APPEAR ON OCCASION[ NO CLUTCH OR REVERSE GEAR.] I KNOW OF ONE STERLING DOLPHIN SPECIAL 290 HP 6 CYLINDER. |

Here is a picture of a 6 cylinder Sterling Dolphin from a 1926 catalog.
I don't know of any for sale either... but there is a 4 cylinder Sterling for sale on the classifeds now.

John; I looked for a year for a 6cyl Dolphin in Marine trim and finaly settled for a 6cyl Sterling Petrel for an Albany Runabout I restored.See Speltz Vol#6. The Smithsonian has one(GR) in storage but had no interest in parting with it.It came from the Commuter "Pam" which is listed in the Acbs directory with alternate power.I think Pete Henkel new about the "Pam" as it was a Great Lakes area commuter.The 2nd Dolphin Pam carried is rumered to have gone to Lake Tahoe.This may have been 20 yrs ago.There is a running GRS in a Great Lakes Crusier in Michigan.I saw it at the Hessel show in the UP several years ago.A friend in Illinois with a restored 8cyl Dolphin stationary has had a ride on the Great Lakes Crusier in the last two years-It's owned by a gentleman living in Grand Rapids Mi.-I think the boat is in Muskegan Mi.
I have the carcus of a GRS-the original engine from the Albany-It's beyond hope.I donated one of the camshafts to Joe Fraunhiem in Seattle.He's trying to upgrade a GR to GRS specs.His family owns the Miss St.Lawrence which I think is a Stanley designed Sweepstake boat-originaly had a GRS but the 454 in it now drives it very well albeit with out the awsome exhaust note.
There is a account of one of the "Rainbow" series boats racing in Hamilton(Ontario)Harbor with twin GRS Dolphins.After risig 15' above a swell;it landed sending both engines through the bottom-happy fishing!! Bruce Hall |

Hi fellows,
I have a Sterling Dolphin 4 cylinder engine with triple ignition. It was used as a backup power source for a vertical lift bridge. I don't know what it has for hours on it, but I don't think it has been run much. It does turn over and seems to have good compression. The bridge was built in 1927, so I would suspect that it is about the same year. Maby you guys could help me determine its worth and help me sell it.

I have a Sterling Dolphin Engine. It does not have a gear box or clutch. It was equipted to run a generator. If you are imterested write me. |

6 cyl. Sterling Dolphin engine mounted on cast iron stand with two impeller pump. Anyone interested? If not it's going to the scrap yard. |
