Was there a relationship between Truscott and Toppan? The tags are very similar and the engine in the 1907 Toppan ad has many characteristics in common with the Truscott engines of that period.

Here are two more Toppan ads. One is 1909, the other 1913. The motor shown in both is a dead ringer for a Detroit Engine Works motor except this one has the geared timer rather than the simple handle clamped onto the crankshaft. A Lunkenheimer "Nonpariel" Type A generator valve is evident. It appears that Toppan probably bought engines and simply retagged them. The earlier engines may have been related to the Truscotts, the later ones related to the Detroit family. Note the address given in each ad. Toppan used 9 Haverhill Street and 25 Haverhill Street interchangably for both the Toppan Boat Manufacturing Co. and the Toppan Motor Co. at least for the 1909 to 1921 period.
