I have a 1947 Monk design 30' cruiser with a Chrysler Crown M7 berthed in Tacoma, WA. I removed the starter today because it was not engaging properly, grinding the flywheel. I found the typical dry Bendix, no lube at all, rusty. Cleaning and lubing will fix the problem - but, the placard says it's a 6 volt starter. The boat is 12 volt, but it has 2 six volt batteries in series, parallel with a 12 volt battery. I took the starter apart to clean and inspect and it does indeed look 6 volt, only two coils, not the four you see in a 12 volt. Part number is 1113864. Any reason to replace it with a 12 volt when it eventually dies?

I cruised the boat 40 miles yesterday from Port of Edmonds, WA to Tacoma, its new home. On the way, I could control the water temp from 185° to 205° with power settings and the cabin heater. What temp should this engine show at 2000 rpm? Taking it up to 2200 rpm caused the temp to climb quickly, but I backed off before it went over 205°. The boat does 7.5 knots at 2000 rpm, 2200 rpm gets another half knot maybe. It's a displacement hull, so I can't imagne it will do more than 9 knots in any case. How fast should I run this engine? Is 2200 rpm reasonable. Should it cruise at a higher rpm - or lower? I have no experience with the M7, but it sure seems to run fine. Any tips tricks or info greatly appreciated.

Someone probably converted it(boat) to 12 volt years ago and often the starter is not changed as they will work fine on 12.

Well, I cleaned up the starter, lubed it and reinstalled - no help, time for a new one I suppose. Anybody know where I can find a starter for this M7? I suppose I will want a 12v, not sure why I would replace it with a 6v since it's getting 12 volts now.

Starter part number is 1113684 and the engine is serial number 32457.

Any leads appreciated.

Get one from a shop that rebuilds starters. Those engines were also used in welders and combines. that is where I got a replacement for mine now I just have it rebuilt when it goes bad.
