Hi,
my md1 had lost compression, so i have stripped the top end, however i don't really want to pay the £43 i've been quoted for a head gasket so i'm fabricating one out of 1.5mm copper sheet. Has anybody anyprevious experience of doing this? and setting up the cylinder head clearence?

Hi ncib,
Well yes, but not on a Volvo, you will need to find out what it is from Volvo's or the workshop manual,(might be a free one on the net?), the clearance is set up with lead (core solder will do) wire, held in place with greese with the head down to the correct setting lbs ft wise, turn the engine over twice, if you were to ask me to hazard a guess i would say 34 to 38 thou clearance between the piston and head at TDC but that is a guess!, but if you have the old head gasket you could mike it up and work out the clearance it was set up to from there, but only if it was correct in the first place, i.e. not messed about with over the years,
there is nothing wrong with making a solid copper gasket up providing it is the correct size,almost all engines were fitted with gaskets like that many years ago,give it a very light smeer with a thin gasket cement when refitting for the last time, (hylomar comes to mind,if that is how you spell it).

We have a few MD1B parts on the MarineEngine.com site at this link.
Do you have a parts manual? Knowing the part numbers would help.
You can also try a Volvo Penta dealer. |
