I have recently bough a boat fitted with a 1980 Volvo MD5A but i have been unable to get it to start. I have just taken the cylinder head off and the exhause valve isn't seating very well into the head. Would this be enough to cause enough of a drop in compression to stop the engine from starting? Any other ideas what the problem could be. There is plenty fuel reaching the injector which is in good working order. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am beginning to think i will never see the engine running |

Hi there, I am a owner of a MD5B and these engines are quite similar if not the same. In the beginning when we bought the boat, the injector was leaking and we had difficulty starting when she was cold, also the interior were the engine was installed was covered with black stuff that should have been inside the combustion chamber I guess. So a drop in compression is a killer for this engine. I am facing another problem now: the engine suddenly stopped and I don't have any fuel in the filter but the there is enough in the tank. I think the problem is in the feed pump, anyone have an idea or tips? regards wouter |

Hi Wout, First of all check the valves and diaphragm in the lift pump it would pay you to get a rebuild kit and fit that while it is off, also check the fuel filter and the seal, there must not be any leaks from the injectors a new seal may be required for these if they are. Keith |
