Hopefully someone can help... The engine is jammed in forward gear, this happened when I was trying to remove the cotter pin on the gear lever. I dont think I used a great deal of force, but it certainly wont budge now! Any ideas about how get it un jammed?

James ,arm yourself with a heavy hammer and a block of hard wood.If as you say the transmission is locked in forward here is what you do. Give the coupling on the prop shaft a good belt towards the prop .This will disengage the cone. |

I tried as you suggested, but I think its been stuck for too long, and wont budge. It originally happened when I tapped out the cotter pin on the gear level - I must have wedged the cone. I also changed the oil yesterday before I started with the hammer, to find it a little emulsified with water.
Do you think i should just carry on with the block of wood and hammer? Thanks, James |

Hi James ..sounds like the cone is rusted in . I would drain the oil and put something a lot more viscous say Diesel, turn the engine over so the Diesel soakes into the cone and try the hammer again.In your case it will require a good belt ...turn the coupling so that you can hit it from different sides vvvvv |

Hi Peter, I emptied the sump, and poured in the diesel, but it wasn't entirely successful. As you said it must be rusted in fast. Would you just carry on until freed, or is there anything else that would help?

James ,you may have to give it some time to soak in . I have heard a mixture of diesel and auto transmission oil has very penetrating qualities,could be worth a try .You may just have to undo those socket head bolts and remove the gear box ......it's a pain in the arse to have to resort to this . I would persevere with the hammer and block of wood but give to oil more time and when you hammer it do it from all sides of the coupling.Your mention of water in the box indicates that some thing is amiss .Lets know how you progress

Peter, thanks very much, I shall try again! I think the water got in from the top of the engine, between the gearbox and the selector lever. The gasket was half missing. Hopefully it is not to stuck! Merry Christmas |

Peter, still the same - but I have wedged a piece of wood between the gearbox and the prop shaft - hopefully when I return it will free up.
Also I tried running it up recently, but all it was doing was running at full throttle! It was ok before i put it in the boat though. I have heard the carb needs to be level, but I cant see how to do this. Any suggestions please? |
