Howdy,

I do farm engines, know little about marine. Bought some printers blocks of ebay that say Cook and Kettering marine and farm engines. Made in Ridge Illinois. My mother's name was Kettering.

Has anyone heard of this company? I have googled till my eyes hurt and found nothing.

Thanks
Chris

Chris

I have accumulated and keep notes on North American marine Engine manufacturers from 1880's to 1930's, There doesn't seem to be a Ridge Illinois but there is a Cambridge Illinois and I list a Cook Engine Company from the years 1901 ca to 1911 ca. They are a very obscure mfgr and so far I know little about them. seems they made 1,2,3,and 4 cylindered engines from 2 1/2 to 20 Hp !

Have no Kettering name associated with this Cook eng Co., or any of the other manufacturers names in my list so far, I am interested in finding out more about this Company as to whether its this one or a very different one altogether??

The one Kettering that I am familiar with is the Moumental genius at the turn of the Century Charles Franklin Kettering known to all as the "BOSS". He held 300 plus patents, invented the electric starter, founded the Dayton Engineering Labs Company- DELCO that was purchased by General Motors in the late teens, to be united under them with the Remy Company and become a common name to us all Delco-Remy . His engineering career under Alfred Sloane the chairman of GM, his work on the design and mfgr of the 71 series detroit deisels etc. still lives on today in the wonderful foundation of the Sloane- Kettering Institute .

Richard,

Thanks for your response!!! I feel you are on to something. I have about 7 copper blocks with reverse print. One shows a building with Cook & Kettering marine and farm engines wrote on it. The engraving shows horse and buggy and trains, but no cars. Two big blocks are of the engine itself, and on the nametag is just the name Cook and Ridge Il. Since these are artist drawings, that might be by the shorted the letters and dropped Cambridge and kettering. The rest of the blocks are various parts of the engine.

The people I bought them from did not know where they got them, and I have not been able to find a "Ridge" Illinois anywhere.

I am trying to figure out how to get some images off the blocks so that I am no longer forced to read them in a mirror. I think one is supposed to be two color, because the are the same size and picture, but not quit the same parts are roughed out.

If I figure out how to print some, would you like a copy?

Thanks agian for your help
Chris

RICHARD,

That looks like the one. I will go home at lunch and pull out the blocks and compare. The people I bought the blocks from are in davenport, so they might be the very ones that made this picture.

There is a print shop in town, I will stop in and see what they can do for me.

Neat slogan, this project is getting more fun by the minute.

Thanks
Chris
