The firing order on the Chris Craft literature is 1-5-6-3-4-2-7-8. The firing on the Chevy small block literature is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Can someone please tell me why this is?

The only two things I can think of is reverse rotation and the engine in the boat in a reversed positon. What cylinder are they calling # 1?

To tell if it is a reverse rotation look at the flywheel. All car engines that I know of rotate counterclockwise. A reverse rotation engine will turn clockwise viewed from the flywheel

Thanks to jb and ernie. The engine turns clockwise when viewed from the flywheel and the engine is in the boat in a reversed position. #1 cylinder when viewing from the flywheel is the farthest away on the left side as engine is currently set up. On the Chris Craft literature, they show the #1 cylinder when viewing from the flywheel is the first on the right side. To complicate things more, they show the opposite rotation to be 1-8-7-2-4-3-6-5. Engine is currently running 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 per Chevy specs. Chris Craft has the transmission on the opposite end from the flywheel.

The first firing order you gave sounds like a variaton of a Ford firing order, 15426378. When you reverse rotaion and reverese the engine, things get really mixed up. Without changing the crankshaft you only have a limited amount of options, one piston is on the intake stroke, it's paired cylinder is on the power stroke. These can be swapped with camshaft grinds, Ford did this on their HO engines, 13726548. 5&3 and 7&4 were swapped, these cylinders were 360 degrees apart in the firing order and were reconfigured with the cam. Split the order and place half beneath.

jb, you have me thinking that I have the rotation mixed up. The prop is right hand rotation. Looking at the stern of the boat that means that the enging rotation has to be counter clockwise if you look at the flywheel. Sorry about the mix-up. The rest of my message of October 15-9:24 am is okay.
