Hello - I just brought home a Gray Marine Phantom Four 75, serial no. G5817. Can anyone tell me the approx. date of manufacture, whether or not it is a Palmer block or a Continental or Hercules and if one of those the model number, where to get things like a gasket set etc. Thanks very much. Bob, There is a gray engine known as a model 750 that fell between the Phantom 4-62 and the Phantom 4-86... it may have also been called a Phantom 4-75. It was 3-7/16" x 4-3/8", 162 cid, 75hp at 3600. I am pretty sure that engine would have been based on a Continental model F-162 "L-head" engine. I don't have any serial number data... but the broad date range would be about 1939 to 1958. Regards, Andrew |

Andrew I have several Gray items that describe the Four 75 and the Four 162 which was also called the Four 52. They seem to be the same engine with the same displacement, i.e., 3-7/16 x 4-3/8. Gray discriminated between them by putting the 162 in the class of medium and heavy duty engines and the Four 75 in the class of high speed engines. Apparently the Phantom's were all high speed with a high horsepower rating at a very high RPM. They probably did a better job of balancing the Phantom series and used different jets in the common carburetor body. As for the block, the Four 75 has Gray Marine cast into the starboard side of the block so my guess is that it is a Gray block but I suppose Gray could have had Continental add a core pattern to the block casting. I have an operating manual on the way which may help shed some additional light. Thanks Bob Price |

Andrew - I just spoke with a guy named Ken at Gray Marine Engines in Oshkosh, WI, 920/231-7909. He apparently has the assets of Gray Marine and has some parts etc. Bruce Hall gave me the phone number. He confirmed that the block is a Continental because Continental owned Gray Marine from the late 40's to the mid/late-50's. He wants a small fortune for the missing fuel pump so now I need to see if I can find one of those. I tried the obvious, NAPA, and they couldn't help. Bob |

Bob NAPA may have the fuel pump you need. Look for graymarine engines in the marine section listed under Continental. If that fails, there are thousands of these engines still in use today in forklifts and tractors. Duby marine in tonawanda NY or Van Ness engineering in New Jersey would be able to help you, as well. |

Doug - would there be any difference between a fuel pump for a Continental F-162 and a Gray Phantom Four 75 using the same block? And for what it is worth, Gray called the slow speed version of this engine a Four 162. A local company, Albany, NY, that specializes in Continental engines tells me that they can get a fuel pump for the F-162 for about $55. The Continental part no. is F400F312; Gray part no. 1523133. Thanks |

I purchased a '56 chris craft with a Gray Maring engine. The tag on the cylindar head has the following: Gray Maring Gray Phantom Model 4-74; D 1817 On the lower half of the engine there is a tag which states: Continental Motor Corp F 4 162 25822 That is all I can read except for patent #s. What is the purpose of two differing identification tags? Is it one engine or constructed of parts from two different companies? Can anyone tell me where to get parts for this particular engine. Is there a reliable source out there somewhere? Thanks -- Jack Baker :-) |

Looking for a Continental F-163 engine to use in a Lincoln welder. The engine block I have is cracked so I would be interested in a block or a rebuildable engine with a good block. |

I have a capital 1e reverse gear #57501 which came on my gray 100. When removing crank I found rust damage to one of the reverse gear pinions, driven gear and the driving flange drum was riveted to a flange which could only be removed by cutting it off. Is this a paragon unit or was the whole transmission made by capital? Where can I get parts? |
