John ...I dont have any referance to a P4. Is it like the P5,single cylinder ,reversing gear box.Whatever trueing up the flywheel is reasonably easy. You will need to make or have made the special tool to remove the crankpin. You will aso need to be able the put the shaft between centres to check that it is running true. Lets know more about your P4. |

Could be the crankshaft end is bent? Was the engine dropped heavily?? Generally if the crankshaft is out of true then its difficult turn the crankshaft without any binding after assembling the crankcase as I have found with a P55 I'm restoring. Alternatively, maybe a crankpin wasn't tightened sufficiently?? I put my crankshaft between centres on the lathe and found it is 5 thou out of true on one of the webs. As shown in the Stuart Notes publication, an easy and rough way to check if the crankshaft is out of true is to use a good steel edged ruler across each pair of webs. If out of true undo and loosen the relevant crankpin and then tap, tap, tap then retigten - otherwise if a bent crankshaft end then replace that section of the crankshaft. If you are in Australia then email me about a replacement end. Good luck. |

Many thanks for the reply gentlemen.I suspect the engine may have been left resting without support. The engine runs but with flywheel wobble.I suspect the P4 is a predecessor to the P5 mine was part of a generating set rather than a boat engine and was tank cooled. |
