I am restoring a dead MD1 bought in a Westerly 22. The water casing was split so replaced with a good one last week. Now the whole engine gets VERY hot. Water coming out the back, impellor seems OK and thermostat opens. I think the water passages in the block may be full of muck and blocking the flow so it all goes through the bypass. Any thoughts on how to clean it out without taking the head off?? Is there anything I should check in the brass thermostat housing which also has the bypass in it? Thanks |

Check that the thermostat has a small air hole in it to allow for complete filling of the system, make sure that the hole is at the highest point if the stat is at an angle.
Have used caustic soda before as a coolant system flush but not advisable if the coolant goes through the motor & not a heat exchanger.
Before you try any cleaning with chemicals, ensure that the stat has been removed to allow for free circulation of water. |
