I have a Buchanan Rocket inboard engine, 1958 vintage, gas, 6 cylinder, that looks like a Hercules block but I have been unable to identify the block accurately since there is no raised boss with the engine model stamped into it that I can see. There are a series of letters that are actually cast into the block. The letters are GWC or GWG and are near the fuel filter glass. The carb (Zenith updraft has been removed). Are there other unique identifiers that I should be looking for? Would photos of a specific area of the engine help? I need to identify the engine so that I can get the appropriate manuals since I want to rebuild it. Thanks. Doug R.

Larry, Here is the other side, and a photo of the head. BTW the following is stamped on on of the engine frame/mounts - "K203300", which happens to be the serial number of the engine. If there are other photos that would help I can provide them easily. Thanks. Doug R.

One other piece of information - on the head, sort of between spark plugs 3 and 4 is a 4 digit number cast into the head. The number is 5498. Doug R. |

I might need some help on this one.The head has the lines like a continential, but most have the distributor in the center. In the center of the head there appears to be some cast letters maybe CWC if so i would vote for continetial. |

Larry, I really appreciate your efforts on this identification issue. Here's a picture of the letters cast into the head - they look like a C with an L together. Could these letters stand for Continental??

The spark plugs are Champion J-8J. Do you think the CL letters cast in the head represent Continental? |

I think I've found out what it is. On the starboard side of the block, behind the top of the ignition coil and just at the top of the block is a raised boss with what is either OXD5M or QXDSM stamped onto it. These letters are just above a series of numbers that are much more visible on the raised boss. I've attached a photo of the raised boss - you can see below the boss - the bolts that would hold the ignition coil. I removed the coil for this photo. I am guessing that the engine is a Hercules block, QXD, so if anyone can confirm that it looks like a Hercules QXM block that would help. I would also like to know what the characters that follow the QXD characters could be and what they would designate. As I mentioned, they seem to be 5M or SM - they are really faint and therefore hard to id.

It looks like you found the right numbers. The 5 after QXD means there are 5 timeing gears and the M should be marine. A continetial engine would have had D16 or UD16 (or something close) sparkplugs.I don't remember seeing a QXD engine no help there. The parts between the coil and distributor do look similar to those on the DOO series. |

If you are anywhere near Penatanguishene, Wyebridge Engine probably have parts, valves, head gaskets etc etc for your Rocket. I had a Seabird boat with a Rocket and I was able to get pretty well everything I needed for a valve job on the engine. There are plenty of these engines around the Muskoka Lakes so a Zenith carb should not be a major problem to find. You can also try Duke Marine Service ( Ed Skinner) in Port Carling. miro |

Thanks Miro, and everyone else for their help. Penetang isn't too far away so I'll call Wyebridge Engine about parts etc. I don't anticipate a big problem finding a Zenith carb for it. I'll plan to drop into Duke Marine Service to speak to Ed Skinner about the engine and boat one of these days. Thanks again to everyone! Doug |
