Apologies for intruding, I suspect the engine I am looking for info on is not quite old enough for this group ! But, I am taking a long shot & need some help. I am looking for any information on MODAG engines. in particular a 6 cyl diesel air start. Anyone point me in the right direction ? |

No apologies needed... this discussion board is open to all. Can you give us some more information on the engine? Do you know:
Where it was built? Approximately when it was built? Displacement in cubic inches or cubic centimeters? Do you think the company made their own castings or built the engine on a purchased block? Regards, Andrew |

Thanks andrew, Limited information so far. German, possibly east german. Around 1940's No idea on displacement, Power output approx 190 Hp I suspect made from own castings, I have been told that this company was one of the forbears of Deutz But, so far no contact from that direction. |

Mike; Give this a try. Call gas engine magazine editor Richard Backus at 785 274 4379 in Topeka Kansas or e-mail [email protected] He will list your questions in the monthly magazines REFLECTIONS column edited by C.H. Wendel; noted and published antique engine authority. Wendel has connections in Germany and in fact is sponsoring a tour in July 2002 to Germany for magazine subscribers and fellow old engine collectors.Wendels connections in Germany would most likely be able to help. |

Here's a Modaag-Krupp ad from "Die Yacht" 1930 though I don't know if this is the same engine as the Modag asked about here. |

MODAG/MODAAG (Motorenfabrik Darmstadt AG). Among the oldest German motor factories youll find also the Motorenfabrik Darmstadt, operating under the company name Modaag or Modag. Already in 1902 the first combustion engine was produced in Darmstadt. In 1906 Friedrich May took over the company, and until his death in 1939 he made the firm one of the most important motor factories in Germany. After the designs and patent of Soehnlein (Solos-Motoren-Gesellschaft), 2-stroke ignition motors were produced from 1908. Out of this came later 4-stroke-diesel-engines, thereafter with injection-aircompressor, and later also compressor free diesel engines up to 1200 hp effect were produced. Engines of type D were offered in 9 different models, from 6 hp up to 80 hp. They were very solid, and used very little fuel, |

I have the user manual for the Modag diesel engine. We were using a 4 cylinder engine for quite a while. It was a 2 stroke, supercharged, diesel engine. One of the cylinders would act as a air compressor to fill the starting bottle, when the load had to be lowered. After that, the cylinder was switched into a firing cylinder and the engine could be fully loaded. |

Hello, I'm the owner of a retired USCG harbor tug. Her original engine is still aboard, it's a 1944 Murphy ME650, which is a supercharged four cycle inline six of 200 hp. There's one thing about it I can't figure out... coming out the top of the exhaust manifold is a round steel tank with a simple gauge of tempered glass pipe running up the exterior to indicate the level of liquid inside. There is also a copper tube running from the manifold up and over into the top of the tank, which is open, uncapped. Is this a coolant reserve tank? My manual does not cover the marinised version of this engine. The tank is currently empty. Any information anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. |

Modag engines featured Aerzener Maschinenfabrik super charger blowers. We still service these to this day. Google Aerzen USA for getting in touch with service / repair folks. |
