I recently bought this engine. Their is no ID plate and as yet, not found an engine number, diameter of flyweel is 19" x 4.5". Center Shaft to top of cylinder, 2ft. Flyweed rim (outside) to end of prop coupling 26.5", width of base 16". Their is what appears to read, "RALSTON" on the top of cylinder cover, also opposite this... reads "CCM.CYLINDER", the only other markings on the engine is on one of the inside flyweel spokes and reads, "D&E 19". The engine is siezed but looks to be quite complete, the maggy looks to be not original, not sure of bore or stoke, have not opened engine yet. Any information on this engine would be much appreciated. Regards

Stephen I think this is a Palmer M. Your will most likly find the bore 5" and stroke 6". It is similiar to a Model R T head I have. It also has the D& E 19 on the flywheel. Presume the engine is in Australia. What is interesting about this is the marking CCM. This almost indicates an Aust made cylinder, maybe a replacement. The CCM stands for CANADIAN CYCLE MOTOR AGENCY. They had agencies thoughout Quensland and Northern New South Wales. Will send you an email re this. Allan |

Allan Thanks for your reply - yes the engine is in Cairns. I recently got it off ebay and picked it up from Mount Morgan near Rockhampton. I've partly dismantled the engine and it looks like you're right - there is M1 cast into the bottom of the lower crankcase and the bore is 5". The conrod has cast in one side and reads "Palmer Bros Cos Cob 1908". On the other side of the rod reads D.E.M.O.&T No 555. Also there is 07 stamped on the top crank case under the cylinder. Don't know much about Palmers - any idea about HP X RPM? Do you think 1908 is the date of manufacture? Are they a common model? The RT you mentioned - is that a similar engine to the M1? Thanks again Allan Steve |

I agree with Allan. Palmer Model M-1 and the cylinder is probably a replacement cast up by CCM as Allan says. I have never seen a Palmer Con rod with the date before. D.E.M.O & T means that conn rod fits those model engines. The number 07 will probably be found stamped on the machined face of the lower half of the crankcase. The upper and lower half were line bored as a pair and therefore they needed to make sure top and bottom half didn't get mixed up in the factory. They made their engines in lots of 100 so the 07 numbers only relate to that engine in that lot. The number 07 can appear in any lot of 100 and it is not unique to Model M. The engine in the 1907 catalog is rated at 5 hsp at 600 RPM and swung a 17" prop. Weight 250 pounds. The engine is very rare. Not having a serial number it is not possible to give a manufacturing date by year. Too often when cylinders were replaced the Serial number if there was one would in early Palmer practice be attached to the foward face of the cylinder. This meant that too often the serial number went with the old cylinder. This practice was not changed until about 1930 when the serial number would be affixed to the crankcase where it was not likley to be removed. We know of no serial numbered engine prior to 1909. The conrod date makes it apparent the engine was produced either that year or later years. In any case the engine would have been out of production by the end of 1912 being replaced by the NL and NR series. I guess I would say made between 1908 and 1912 is a fair statement as to age. Interesting to see it. I am curious how the spark advance lever operates with the mag. Is there a timer and the mag is controled by the timer for jump spark? |

Steve, What a great find! Would it be possible for you to do me a BIG favor? I would like to have you measure the outside diameter and the width of the flywheel, I have had one cast up for my M and it really looks very big. Thank You Matt |
