Hello all.
This is my first posting as I am a new member. I just purchased a 3 HP Acadia marine gas engine that is fully operational according to a friend of mine whom I purchased it from. I would like to clean and polish it because currently it has surface rust and grease all over it. Can I sandblast it and then prime and paint it or what should I do?

John,
Yes you can do that. However you must be absolutly positive that you don't get ANY sand anywhere it shoulnd't be. Especially between the eccectric and the front of the crankcase. Acadia flywheels are all but impossible to remove so you will have to protect this area. It goes without saying that you will have to block all of the ports, water, grease and oil holes. I would suggest putting pipe plugs in all of these.

I would seal around the crank and any other critical areas with a large bead of RTV silicone, the sand won't affect it too much and it can be peeled off.The areas not blasted can be wire brushed. As Ernie said, sand is very invasive, and devastating in the wrong spots. |

Thank you for the advice. The last thing I want to do is damage the engine as these are getting harder and harder to find here in Newfoundland. My father was a fisherman for 50 years and used several Acadia and atlantic engines including the double 5 HP in a trap skiff. I worked a 4 HP when I started fishing at 13, so I want to preserve a piece of Newfoundland history. |

Hi, I'm writing a scene set in 1896. Are you able to tell me if Acadia engines were around at that time and what HP they would be?

I have a 3 hp Acadia and it appears to be from the 1920's, that is as close as I can go. I have been trying to find out the exact age, but no luck so far. |
