The American Gasoline Motor Company of Baldwinsville NY sold casting kits to individuals and other companies. For a small additional fee they would supply the hand hole covers with your name. They also would supply complete engines or machined parts that the customer might not be able to manufacture. Attached is a paragraph from their cataloge.

The designer of the marine engine that American Gasoline Engine Co. Casted was by Van Epps.
American was succeded by Seneca Boat & Engine Co. and then became Valley Boat & Engine Co., The trade name of the engine was "Faultless" by 1909 the Valley Co. moved to Saginaw Michigan.
Van Epps engines were mfgrd by Gooley & Edlund of Syracuse N.Y. in 1907,By 1909-11 Livinston and Van Epps was the name on the engine, By 1912-13 The engine was availble Through Rome Gasoline Engine Co. Rome N.Y!
I have ads and articles of each of these Companys but am in the midst of commputer trauma and can't access or scan and send data ??
This is an interesting topic, my mothers maiden name was Van Epps and her father I got to know in the early 1950's while he was doing the very fancy wood working on the interior of a sailing yacht in Miami, the beautiful wood and the spiral staircase was like nothing I had seen before. Grandfather said that he was born and grew up in North Syracuse N.Y. and his family was always in the boat business , he liked the wood working side but not the engines or mechanical work.
Didn't put this info together untill several yrs ago and will visit the Syracuse library one day to find out where these Van Epp's are on the family tree! From my mothers stories They were independent tough capable Dutchmen, my grand father I mentioned above Died in 1965 at age 87 he slipped off the road on a rainy night in a little sea side town here in Fla on his Harley Davidson that I had rebuilt many yrs earlier for him ! |

I recall the American Engine company got it's start from the American Knife Co (read planer and shaper blades) Their was a very early active motor boat club in Baldwinsville(on the Seneca river)- I think Van Epps designed and built a few engines for the owner of the American Knife Co and the company grew out of that. Valley was a kit boat company( I've heard from a boat owner in Maine some time ago)that was given financial incentive to move to Michigan-the company later went on to build cycle cars and trucks I believe.I've read that Morris Foundry (eventualy a pump mfg and bought out by Goulds Pumps in the (?) 70's also build a few engines in Baldwinsville. Valley Boat and Motor was located in a former canning factory along the South side of the present canal lock . The site now is the Lock 24 restaurant in Baldwinsville. |
