My Dad & I have just completed a 3yr restoration of a 1961 17' Century Resorter w/ a Fireball 327 225hp Grey Marine V8. The motor had undergone a complete 100% rebuild 15yrs ago & was put in storage until Dad & I found the time to finish the Resorter. During the engine rebuild my Dad decided to replace the existing sidedraft carburators with a brand new 600cfm edelbrock marine four barrel carburator. Long story short...The Engine runs great...but only in the driveway & in neutral. Under load however, is a different story. As soon as we reach around 1500rpm the engine looses power & starts to cough & backfire through the carb. We have checked little things like fuel filter, points, spark, vacuum pressure, & timing and everything checks out. If anybody has any advise to get this old girl running please help!!! thanks, Mike

sounds like it's starving for fuel. Could be a clogged tank vent or fuel line or maybe the wonderful combination of old fuel pump and ethanol. |

Douge, thanks for the post. The vent is clear. we checked it when we installed the new gas tank, new gas line, & new filter. The fuel pump is brand new, but only has AMC stamped on it. No part # to be found so we're thinking maybe wrong fuel pump? We're also looking into the distributor which is going to be replaced with an electronic ignition. Crossing our fingers. |

Hi, I have this same problem. maybe we can help each other. I have a 68 Coronado with a corvette stingray 427. We bored it out to 496 and did a complete rebuild. it dynoed 550 lbs of torque @3500 rpm and 462 hp @4800 rpm. When I put the boat in the water the first time, I learned what "reversion" is. Yep . The temp ran up to 220 and it sucked water from the lake back up into the engine. So, we tore it back down and rebuilt it again. $10,000.00 ( for two engine rebuilds !) later and a new set of headers and I was ready to go again ! It ran great except an occasional backfire through the carb. Replaced the ignition... helped. Gradually got worse, sounded like a vacuum leak AND the backfire through the carb. We replaced the intake manifold gasket. Now, it does the exact same thing that you described. It did it before we replaced the gasket .Runs great with no load. Rev it up and no problem, but under a load @ 1500 rpms, it spits and sputters and backfires through the carb. We've tried the timing. At this point we think that when the engine heated up it stretched the timing chain. If this is true, no matter how accurate we get the timing, it's going to act up. You can check your engine for a vacuum leak by spraying engine start fluid where the intake meets the block, or where the carb hooks up to the intake, but you say that you have already checked for a vacuum leak. Do you think your issue could be the timing chain? If it's the original 40 year old timing chain I'd suspect it. If anyone out there disagrees, please let me know, I work on computers for a living. I'm not an engine expert, but I sure have learned a lot. I've learned that BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand ! Good Luck and please post here when you find the problem. I'm going to replace the timing chain probably this week or next and I will let you know if that solved the problem ! |

Jay, monster motor in the Coronado!! Dad & I have been scratching our heads for sometime & couldn't figure it out...until last thursday @ midnight...I'm almost embarressed to post this...our freaking spark plug wires where in the wrong firing order! I know it sounds really stupid, but double check the simple things. Post some pics too. Good luck to yah, Mike |

I'm glad you found it ! The firing order on my engine should be just a standard big block chevy v8 firing order. ( 18436572 )I'm going to try setting the timing again before I get brave enough to pull the timing cover off. I'm setting the timing by putting the harmonic balancer at 0 degrees and starting with whichever post the distributor is pointing, then turning the distributor to adjust the timing to try to get it to start. Maybe because of the radical cam (intake dur = 236 , exhaust dur = 246 , Crane part number = WG1055 , Grind number = 300-2H ) The engine won't start with the timing set at 0 degrees ?? Spark plug wires too close to each other and crossfiring ?? Bad carb ?? I don't know, I'm going to keep trying and let you know when I find it. I'll post pics soon ! Someone who really knows engines will probably read my post and think " This guy knows just enough to be dangerous. " and I will readily admit sir " You're absolutely right !" |

By the way, the reason it won't start now is because I replaced the intake manifold gasket , and the distributor had to come out to do that. I have not been able to get it to start and run right since then. I know I've got the timing off, at least I think I do, we've set it so many times and swore we had it right, 180 degrees off , in, out, sideways, upsidedown, backwards, forwards !!! I've just got to keep trying until I get it right. |

I HAVE A GRAY MARINE V8 MODEL # 225, SERIAL # T7748 AND WAS WANTING ANY INFORMATION KNOWN ON THIS ENGINE. JUST WAS GIVEN TO ME AND HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REBUILT AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT OR ON THIS ENGINE AND WAS LOOKING FOR ANY INFO ON LEARNING THIS ENGINE. That would be a 60's vintage AMC block v-8 often used by Century Boat Co. They came in other engine models like the V8-195 and the dual carb V8-238. Hydrolic transmission I presume with yours-- should be discussion archived on this site. Put Graymarine 225 V8 in the search function of this site. |
