I came across a 1.5 hp make-n-break, and I have most of the parts but the ignition system, and a part that bolts on ahead of the governer, I think it operates the throtle. I found an old make-n-break coil, but like I said I don't know how the old ignition system operated. I can't find any diagrams or anything, so any info is useful, even links to a web site that I might not be able to find. thanks. |

Dylan, If you can supply a little more information maybe someone here can help. Do you know who made the engine? How do you know it is a 1.5HP? The make-n-break ignition worked basically the same on most of the early one lungers... but each was slightly different. If you can identify your engine maybe someone can post a picture of the identical parts. The Palmer Gas Engine Handbook shows details of the early Palmer make-n-break ingition with good detailed drawings, as well as wiring diagrams that would apply to any make-n-break engine. If you don't know who made the engine you could post pictures here and someone might be able to identify it for you. Regards, Andrew |

it is a fairbanks - morse, ,, I know it is 1.5 /hp because the name plate is on it, it has 3 differnt patent #'s but they are dates. I live right by Lunenburg Foundry, and I went into the archives and they are sending me a copy of the origional manual, that doesn't really help me with how the Governer operates the throtle. It does have a Carb, I was talking to a guy on the weekend that said that they weren't all carborated. "?" I don't know about that,, but he is passing my name along to some of his friends because they have a couple old ones like mine and they can't get them to run so I might be able to get a few parts pretty cheap. I will try to get the patent dates written down the next time I am at the shop. Thanks Andrew |

here is afm make and brake, but it is on a 7.5 hp cylinder. |

Dylan on the East Coast; If your engine has a governor than I doubt very much that it is a marine engine. Something you said has caught my interest.....Lunenburg Foundry has info and manuals on Fairbanks Morse. I have a Canadian Fairbanks Morse single cylinder two cycle marine engine of about 2 hp. Do you know if they have a manual for this engine? ....Joe on the West Coast |

I'll give you the address for the foundry, and you can write them and ask for the specific engine that you are looking for. Mine is a Model Z 1 1/2 H/P. it is classified a "Throttling Governor Engine" It "HAD" yes HAD a type R high tension rotary magneto. Weather or not that tells you anything, I don't konw,, all I know is that I still can't find any parts, yet that is,, I was talking to a guy whos friends have them all together but can't get them to run, and everything works,, and he said they might sell them cheap. model z fm are a very common engine, made by the millions. you are on the wrong web site, you should be on http://www.enginads.com/smokstak.cgi and to find an ignitor go to http://www.oldengine.org/members/brookover/ignitor-list.htm model z were introduced in july 1914, and the type r mag was introduced in late 1924. these engines are still made today, for use in oil fields, although not made by fm. go to this page, http://www.oldengine.org/members/christison/links/ and scroll down and look at all the fm engines, there must be 25 of them, and see which one looks like yours. post the serial number, and i can tell you the year it was made, and from that i can tell you a lot about your engine. |

Bill do you want the number in the top of the casting for the cooling jacket? if so I can look for it,, I haven't been able to get looking at it lately because of work,, but I guess you can't have toys to play with if you don't have the money |

Hi, I have a 5hp Acadia in my 20' motorboat. There is a crack at the back of the water jacket and water seeps out when she's running, not a lot, just enough to put off a little steam. Is it safe to run the engine like this, it still runs perfect and gets lots of water. Also, can I get the crack welded? Hoping to hear from you soon. Ira Dorey Little Burnt Bay, NF |
